How much space does Vista Home Premium 64 bit take up when installed. I was thinking next time I would install Windows again that I would partion the drive to make sure windows has the fastest performance.
By time I do this Windows 7 will most likey be out, but in the mean time what would you recomend to partion the drive for just the windows install.

Why would your windows install need its own partition.... i dont get it.
-
So it does not get fragmented and so it stays faster.
-
Also, keep in mind that you can get W7 via MSDN-AA if you are a student. -
Vista64 Ultimate is around 30gb. Loading Vista on it's own partition is a good idea but give some leeway on how big the partition will be. Some programs might insist on loading to this partition.
-
It's 20 gbs.

The whole separate partition for windows is completely overrated when it comes to the speed difference--if you are very particular and careful, it makes a slight difference, but most people are wasting their time with it.
Now, from an organizational stand point, I am all for it, but in many cases it can be deterimental for "speed"--especially the way you are going about it.
You give yourself a 30gb partition for Windows, then install some game on a second partitition, you harddrive head spends a ton of time moving back and forth between partitions--sometimes a game texture is on partition D, and the it needs a subroutine from a DLL on your system partition--then back for a game data file.
Seriously, I don't want to be mean, but so many of these strategies are either bad or meant for different times.
You are so much better off having extra ram, and keeping your drive defragmented than all of the games people play trying to squeeze out a little extra speed.
Again--partition for organization--not speed. Now, TWO DRIVES is a different issue (not to meantion two drives can be good for data security). But TWO PARTITIONS means drive head thrashing from one to another. -
Two partitions use to speed things up by keeping all the OS files at the front of the disk. Nowadays, harddrives are fast enough where this point is moot.
-
I do it more to avoid fragmentation than anything, and it works; I almost never have to defrag my drive anymore.

-
If you leave your computer on, Vista defragments itself every Tuesday night/Wednesday morning.
