Ok... so I posted looking for some help under "how to prepare laptop to sell", however there are no responses. Here's a different approach:
I'm selling my laptop, and I want to reformat if before I sell but I can't locate my original Installation disc which contains the OS and recovery partition. Well, my new computer happens to be the same brand as my old one (HP Pavilion) only a newer model (ze5300 ---> dv6000). I DO have the recovery discs for my new computer safely stored away (self made of course... thanks HP!). My question is if I can use those recovery discs on my old computer?! I hope that's not a stupid question, but I'm trying to avoid buying them again from HP. Thanks.

Probably not...
1) The drivers and chipset are entirely different, so the new install would probably choke.
2) HP probably thought of that and programmed in a check to make sure it is the right CD and the right model of PC.
3) Your older model didn't have QuickPlay partition or the QuickPlay buttons so you'd probably have some fun there sorting the mess out.
4) You're using the same license on two machines...I'm not too sure what the results of that would be. -
You definitely aren't allowed to do that legally, since you can't use one license on two machines. Technically, it might work, or it might not.

I don't know about HP, but I have a 5 year old Dell destop and a 4 year old Dell laptop. Both with XP Home. I just used which ever CD I come across first, as I don't know which one goes with either one (one is red, one is green though). So I've used both CDs on both computers and having had any trouble. However, I believe computer companies have made it harder over the past 4 years to make it harder to pirate Windows.

You know that is illegal, mr_bots.

Ok, I got the recovery discs. Now Does anyone know of a step-by-step guide of how to completely reformat a computer? On another thread I have some free program recommendations and such, but I really need some sort of "guide" to help me out (I've never done this before, and don't know so much about computers). Thank you.
Using OS/Recovery discs on another computer?
