got loads of videos and my music on a external hard drive was wondering whether there is a easy way of putting pictures as a folder icon e.g. having an album cover picture as a folder icon for folder with an album in it

It's very easy if you have the photo you want to put. You just right click the folder you want the photo to appear, then choose 'properties', then go to the tab 'customize' and make sure the folder type is 'pictures and videos' or 'music icon' or 'details' and further down there is an option 'choose file', a window will pop up and then you can choose which photo you want to put. If you have the photo in the folder it should appear automatically (at least in Vista). Make sure also you have chosen in the perfomance properties in the visual effects 'use a background image for each folder folder type'. You can go by System properties -> advanced Tab -> perfomance settings -> and then in the box close to the bottom there is this option.
I hope this will be helpful.
