I have a HDD from an older computer in an enclosure, that I like to use for backup. It has Vista 64 (like my laptop does now). I want to do a fresh install of W7 on this laptop and transfer all my data to the EHDD. The question is, once this laptop has W7 OS, will it be able to read the EHDD so I can transfer my data back?

If its a plain NTFS formatted HDD with files on it, yes.

Same as you can plug a WD Passport into any computer with a USB port.

If its some special file backup software then you might need that software.

Basically, make sure its an NTFS formatted HDD with "normal files" on it, same as a flash drive an it'll work fine the way it should :)

It's actually from my first SR490, so I'm assuming yes. I just wanted to make sure first. Thanks.

External HDDs when not used with some backup software are just like a flash drive :)
    (In terms of usage)

    SR - from a Vaio?

Have fun with the installation :)
