torrents are not illegal and im pretty sure you can talk about them here.

however, i wonder if you could clarify?

just because you are on a proxy should not mean that you can't use torrents.

what i think is happening, is that you are mistaken. you actually aren't on a proxy. however, your college is blocking access to the ports that the torrent application uses.

    http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?currentpage=All&topic_id=47175&show_part=

there is a good chance that your internet usage policy doesn't say anything that prevents you from using this tactic to get your computer working. they probably just chose to block those ports to discourage users from accessing torrents. however, there IS a good chance that they will ban your IP address from any internet access if you start using large (or moderate) amounts of bandwidth for your torrents, especially during high traffic hours. if your internet usage policy does have a "no torrent" rule (doubtful) you should abide by it.

I've never gotten a proxy to work with my torrent client, I think it would diminish download speeds.

Anyways, I presume that it should be possible to use them.

If you do a bit of googling you should be able to find a few guides on how to configure proxies to work with your torrent client.

Ohhhh Just raed the forum rules stating that

"No form of illegal piracy or illegal file trading allowed on NBR."

So as long as torrents software and problems is disscussed it is not illegal.

    K got it.

Alright guys, we know its not illegal to discuss torrents. But your comments about whether it is legal or not is surely going to get this thread closed anyways, so please, keep this thread on-topic instead of question the legality of the matter, which we already know is LEGAL.

If your university if anything like mine, it'll mean that that those port are blocked(they are open on the wired network though ^^)... You can try using some service like furk.net, basically you pay for an account you dowload the torrent on their server and you fetch it through http...

Provided that your institution has blocked most of the ports, you could attempt to proxy tunnel your way around it. However, most proxy tunnel services require a pay subscription.
You could of course use another of your own PC elsewhere to tunnel through, but in that situation it's probably better for you to remotely access that PC and just torrent straight from there.

If your institution has not blocked ports, but are instead monitoring traffic, then all you need to do is encrypt your download/upload traffic and they should not be able to detect it. Although if you cannot even use Outlook (which is a bit strange, because the ports Outlook uses should be open) means that your institution is most likely blocking.

    www.port-forwarding.com

It will show you how to forward ports via the Router firewall.

    You can then use torrents.

You can also use 'Encryption' on Torrents to bypass the Proxy servers of campus.

    just google it.

Lot of people use Torrents on campus by bypassing the proxy

Just to clarify so you guys don't think ill of him, he's talking about when some users wanted me to include torrent software in my best free software for windows list but i said i couldn't and to stop the discussion immediately as i had originally included a torrent section but it had to be removed as it was on the fence legal for NBR.

Its an http proxy. Basically we can surf internet only if we put this address 172.13.18.19 and this port in 8080 in IE and Firefox. So I think its an http proxy.

You need to uncheck 'Enable UPnP port mapping'

You also need to click on BitTorrent
go to 'Protocol Encryption' & Enable the outgoing.

And check 'Allow incoming legacy connections'

I use proxy's to bypass rapidshare limits lol . It will slow things down unless your using a proxy server your ISP gives you

Try a different proxy address. I dont understand why you need the proxy to surf the net. It should be the opposite
