    Dear all NBR Users,

the strangest thing happened to me today. I have been using Vista on my new laptop for 4 months now... nothing's wrong , only one random start up crash. I updated to SP1 when it came out , and still , nothing wrong....no crashes.

Today however , I duno why everytime I use my laptop for a while it shuts down and reboots. No BSOD , no warnings, just a few second freeze and then shuts down.

I did NOT install any new programmes , drivers , etc todays or yesterday or the past week. This morning i was only running Office2007, MSN and MediaPortal to play music as usual.

my display driver is 169.09 nvidia. (if that helps identifies anything)

Anyway.... this is just pure RANDOMNESS cos like it's been running JUST FINE for the past 4 months , I scanned for virus , no virus. I dun go to dodgy websites..... and yeah.... its rebooted for like 5 times already.

can anyone help? or share some experience? Thankyou guys so much.

    My specs are: T7300 , 2GB Ram , 200GB HDD, 8600mGT , Vista Home premium

It could be overheating thus shutting off to prevent hardware damage

Download HWMonitor and monitor your temps. Post back the temps you get on idle and cpu load

    Thanks flipfire,

I've been using everest to monitor my temps, duno if that's accurate enough for you but my current temp is CPU 52 , GPU 61. My graphics card is on default clock, I overclock with rivatuner when I game (call of duty 4 , etc) and it's reached 80~81 degrees, yet still no problem all this time.

do you think it might be due to virus , driver or hardware problems?

I cant say if its a hardware or software issue. Only way to completely rule out a software issue is if you do a clean/recovery install. If it still does it then its most likely a hardware issue, which isnt a good news.

Your temps seem to be in range, warmer that usual but still not enough to cause shut offs. My gpu hits 80c aswell when OC'd but no shut offs

How long does it take before it starts shutting off? Is there a time pattern or total randomness?

Have you tried doing a system restore to maybe a few days ago when it was still fine?

After the reinstall, you can try cleaning the fan out.
