MPC is better as you can Fastfoward and rewind using the gui while in full screen mode. you can also apply filters with FFDShow. Its not possible with VLC.

but, with VLC you can view dvd iso files with the menus working and its fast too.

    i use both of them.

I like VLC. On occasion, it has problems playing files (possibly due to errors within the file) and the video tends to skip around or it abruptly ends the playback. MPC handles those situations far better if not resolve them seemingly completely. Another plus of MPC is that you are a fan of de juddering in 120Hz HDTVs like I am, then you might like ffdshow's frame rate doubler deinterlace option. It gives alot of artifacts and you need one hell of a processor for those higher resolution videos, but it's something nice to try out.

    MPC

Every player needs codecs or additional codec packs in the system, the codecs are probably installed when you install VLC. There is no installation with MPC, one executable only, and can be run from anywhere.

    EDIT:

Yep, the codecs are installed when you install VLC.

VLC has quite awful mkv support. And it's H.264 decoding is quite inefficient.

MPC or WMP+FFDshow+Haalis media splitter (The two latter being the important bits) are much better for video playback.

FFdshow is better than VLCs implementation. And CoreAVC is much better than FFdshow, but commercial.

No, they are codecs. If you're looking to download a player I would honestly use MPC. I forgot why b/c it was so long ago, but VLC player just wasn't cutting it. It was probably b/c of the mkv playback as Faba mentioned since i watch alot of those types of files.

K-Lite codec pack is what I download. It has MPC with it. It's in the free software sticky

Windows Media Player also isn't bad when you have the codecs....

Just get the K-Lite Codec Pack Standard package, it has everything you need to play H.264 videos, no need CoreAVC like fabarati stated. Both MPC and Haalis Media Splitter are included in the K-Lite Codec Pack Standard package, it's just like a single software solution, the K-Lite Codec Pack Standard installer will set up everything for you in one shot.

You will see there is the K-Lite Codec Pack Full package, but for playback, you won't need that, it has too many codecs imo, plus it's for people to do encoding more.

    http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Codec_Pack.htm

Like I said earlier, the MPC is an installation free player, it's a standalone executable, you can run it from anywhere. It's 100% malware free, you can see their official open source project page here:

    http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli/

    Individual download of MPC:

But you get a bunch of unnecessary stuff as well. What is primarily used for playback in K-lite is FFDShow, but you get a whole bunch of other codecs as well, which are superflous and can conflict. If you want one installer, use CCCP, as that doesn't include the extra ****.

But you have to understand codec packs and player are two different things. Codec packs are nothing yucky if you know what codec packs to use. VLC installs the codecs just like codec packs do, and a lot of good codec packs come with tools for you to control the codec itself.

Have you tried K-Lite Codec Pack Standard? Because even if you install EVERYTHING from K-Lite Codec Pack Standard, it doesn't create any conflict. I've used K-Lite on many systems and none has yet to show any conflict. Hell even the K-Lite Codec Pack Full package won't cause conflicts. People who created K-Lite are not dumb. Also, it comes with advanced tools that you can enable/disable codecs. Maybe because the reason why you got conflicts is you installed too many other stuff other than K-Lite? If you install K-Lite plus many other players and codec packs, then I can see why you might get conflicts. For codecs, personally I only use K-Lite + Real Alternative + QT Lite in my systems and other people's systems that I set up, even with full options from all 3, I get zero conflict.

I would go with K-lite. It has everything, and, for me at least, hasn't caused any troubles. And you can disable anything you may not need

I use MPC because its a low resource using program and I was having issues with MKV files.

You should just try both and compare for yourself.....it's MPC all the way for me though. Haven't looked back

edit: I just installed VLC. My god I hate this thing. When I was watching an anime (MKV file) with subtitles I had to firstly turn the subtitles on manually, then the subtitles looked HORRIBLE.

    Uninstalling...

VLC does need codecs. It's just when you install VLC you install those Codecs

When you install K-Lite it does the same thing. You're installing MPC with all thoe codecs just like VLC player

I never had any problem with K-Lite.

As for MPC, just try it before installing any additional codec packs, there is nothing to install, MPC works with the codecs in your system already. Download the MPC alone, it's one single .exe file. I believe it is the lightest resource player of all.

    http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Media_Player_Classic.htm

If you don't like MPC, you can just delete the .exe file.

Easily MPC because it can actually handle the files I play. Plus, I love the menu pop-up when you move down towards the bottom of the screen while playing full screen. I have no idea why people are saying VLC because it doesn't have a codec pack. VLC is a codec pack. It uses codecs supplied by the FFmpeg Project.

Prasad: If you watch anime, pick up CCC. I haven't used K-Lite, but I've heard it's good. So far, CCC has been able to play everything.
