I generally like VLC, but sometimes it totally confounds me. I'm trying to run my DVD of the greatest movie ever, The Big Lebowski, and it's giving me a scrambled picture. I can see motion, but it's heavily distorted.

Looking at VideoLAN's FAQ page doesn't yield much in the way of, in the parlance of our times, directly actionable information. It's telling me

Except I have no idea what this means or how to do it. Is it suggesting I download a plug-in? OK, but so far, I have failed to achieve finding it on their Web site.

What's the region of the DVD, and what's the region of your DVD drive?

I think the coding is for Linux? I'm not entirely sure.

I gave up on VLC a while back for KM Player - give it a try and see if you like it better!

I've been having a rough time getting dvds to work with VLC, too, for what it's worth. I finally broke down and installed K-lite. Didn't like gunking up my system, but at least it plays dvds now. Shrug.
