for those who use VLC, i was wondering if anyone else experiences slowdown or choppy playback when watching DVD movies? i don't think it's a hardware issue, and it's not a constant problem. it's just annoying. can someone recommend a better app (not windows media player) for watching DVDs?

Never had that problem with vlc...are you sure direct rendering is enabled?
You could try gomplayer, built in codecs for everything and very powerful player. -
Dvd's play fine on VLC for me.
-
I did with the old 156 series drivers for my graphics card. Updated to 167 series and everything is fine and dandy.

VLC used to have issues with my old computer so I'm guessing it has to do with drivers? I'm not sure.

Works for me, too.

Ive never had any problems with vlc running anything.

VLC's amazing on Windows, never had any problems with it.

VLC worked for me, but I believe there's no hardware acceleration. media player classic is a good alternative. I'd get it with the CCCP codec set. http://www.cccp-project.net/
I like MPC more than VLC. It's nice to be able to access the controls while watching something fullscreen by moving the mouse down. It also handles subs much better than VLC, great for anime watching. -
What's MCP?
-
infact the USP of VLC is that it never lags... even if u feed it weird files...
It eats anything u feed it.
Although VLC doesnt give best quality. -
He meant to say MPC (media player classic)
Thats what I like, it plays anything. May I ask which program does give the best video quality? -

VLC works well and plays DVD's fine, but on my computer when I play DVD's with VLC they look like crap.
Any recommendations for a better player? -

The best one, which is the most stable, and takes up the least resources is MPC, along with a codec pack.
-
MPC with FFDshow stuff that comes with the CCCP provides the best video quality.
-
I prefer to use CoreAVC when playing HD content though, as FFDshow may lag if you don't have a powerful enough processor.
-
Yeah that's true, I was giving out a free option that I know of. Honestly, if I wanted to watch a DVD with the best picture I'd pick up an Oppo.
-
so say if i have klite codec pack installed, I can remove that entirely, install cccp and everything will work just with better video quality if i use mcp?
-
Yes, just make sure to uninstall k-lite entirely during uninstall.
VLC: no good for DVD viewing?
