Is VMLite XP Mode free or only shareware? I don't see anything that says it's freeware or what the conditions are.

It is free, but limited to a certain number of VM's you can use at the same time. I have read that you can purchase VMLite XP Mode with unlimited VM's by contacting the author directly on his website.

Thanks, so if I just run one XP VM there is no issue? Will it pop up at any time that I need to buy or anything? I'm basically looking at it because a friend of mine recently updated to a new machine with Win 7 Home Premium, and has a couple peripherals that the drivers don't work with Windows 7, and software for his job that only works in XP. I installed VMLite XP Mode on my machine and it works flawlessly, but just want to ensure it's an unlimited time frame free license, so in 30-60 days a popup won't come up and say sorry, you have to buy it now.

For that software that doesn't run in XP, try setting the run-as prefs on the executable.

Right click on the executable program, grab properties, then select the compatibility tab.

Win7 makes a best-guess as to down-level compatibility for legacy programs, but the user can always force the issue.

I have tried everything, compatability is one of the first things I try. I was up until 2am in a teamviewer session with him trying to get everything to work. Win 7 just doesn't like it. Then one USB device kept dumping out of the XP VM for no apparent reason, and still haven't got that one licked yet. Granted we were both exhausted and not thinking clearly by then, so will give it another go today or tomorrow. He has an older machine that is running XP natively that he'll probably just use for the stuff if he has to, but that machine was going to his kid, so just trying to avoid that hassle.

    Virtualbox supports USB device connections.

Right but specifically looking for the XP Mode. Although there is a plugin for the VirtualBox, it's not as straight forward or intuitive as VMLite. I've used VirtualBox for years. But may have to go that route. Didn't think it would cause so many issues.

The MSFT VirtualPC-based XPMode is handy, but it's kind of limited in what it can do with the hardware.

Unless you're trying to play an old game or something, I can't really see why MSVPC isn't good enough?

Exactly. Problem is my friend only has Windows 7 Home Premium.

Ah. Then download MS VPC for free, but you need an old copy of XP (which you'd need for any VM that doesn't come with W7).
