    Hey,

I've been searching for a way to access my Windows Home Server (WHS) from my computer as if I was on my home network from anywhere. This way I can easily back up every night even when I'm away at university.

The best way I can think of is by using a VPN but I'm not very experienced with them. Any ideas or help with this would be greatly appreciated and if the solution is free even better.

I find logmein and hamachi somewhat a pain when running on WHS or Server 03 or 08, decent software on the desktop OS's though

I don't know about WHS, but I have used LogMeIn for Server 03 and 08 and found it just the same as using it for a desktop OS. But I do agree with you on Hamachi.

TeamViewer possibly won't work in the free version on Windows Home Server as it will recognize it as a Server OS.

You could use a web interface - there is a way to have your home server run a website that allows you to log in - now how its done I don't know.

(But I hope I will be in a position where I need to find out in abotu 3 weeks)

There have been some attempts to establish a connection to the WHS through a VPN for the backup, however from what I've read the success varies. It really is a local only product.

another option depending on your network skill is to use a router which you can flash DD-WRT onto and use the PPTP vpn abilities to access your WHS. ot may sound complicated but it is actually very easy if you are paitent and dont mind reading

this is what I do at home with an old WRT-54GL router and it has been trouble free for over 3 years

Are you able to backup outside of your home network with the PPTP VPN or just access the network share?

full backups, incremental backups, access shares and all, it creates a true PPTP tunnel and acts as if you are actually physically hardcabled to your server.

but be warned you can only move data as fast as you can upload to your server.
( I mostly use this trick for businesses needing access to data on servers and backup at night )

Sounds good I might give that a try. I have some free rackspace and I was thinking about using WHS for an offsite backup system in addition to the local backup.

it works fantasiic for that ... I have 15 companies doing backups to a server here through a single 54GL, granted I DO stagger their autoconnects and we all run a good upload speed as well.

give it a go its pretty darn cheap for the hardware nowadays ( under $60 )
