Is it possible to run Xp mode without an VT enabled processor , if not a few people are going to be disappointed the W7 is released, as the most common C2D processor at the moment seems to be the T6400 and it don't have VT.

EDIT : If you dont know what VT is, it`s Visualization, it allows you to run a emulated version of Xp in Win7 so you can run all your incompatible software, if a bit slower.

IF you want to test if your CPU has VT , run one of the programs below, if not detected make sure it`s turned on in the BIOS , but some manufactures disable the VT even if your CPU supports it and you cannot enable it without a hacked firmware or a new bios.

I think its possible to run, but it might just be a lot slower than it should be; unless MS decided to just disable it from running altogether without VT.

If disabling it works the same as not having a processor capable of it, I could go and disable it, and see what happens.

Is it true that Xp mode is a download and that it`s not of the Win7 DVD?

Right. You have to download both Virtual PC and Windows XP Mode from MS, although some of the manufacturers can choose to have it preinstalled. I don't see it being preinstalled on most computers though, as they say its only intended for businesses that still have programs that only work on XP.

I only use it because Cisco's Clean Access Agent doesn't work in either 64 bit or 7 for me. Plus its also nice to have a test environment to screw around in/with.

I have quite a few old games and some software that does not run on Vista so most likely not Win7 without VT.

XP mode RC is on the Virtual PC website, but to those with Technet (and possibly MSDN) the RTM was just released (last few days). I don't know if it doesn't run on non VT machines, because all of my machines support some form of VT, but I was having an issue where the computer thought VT was off and wouldn't start XP mode after my machines came out of sleep mode. Hence I suspect it might not support non VT machines.

EDIT: as for games, I couldn't run Q3A on the RC because it didn't support 3D acceleration. You might be able to play older RTS.

    There's always compatibility mode in Windows 7, you're better off trying those first before going to virtualization; although I know that only sometimes works, as I've never really had anything work in it either ~_~;

    That`s a BIG sometimes :D

We have only 10 days to Win7 release , I have not tried it yet.

No one should really care or worry about this. Windows 7 'XP Mode' is nothing more than a 'tuned' XP/VirtualPC appliance supplied by MSFT.

It is very easy to roll your own without any of the restrictions that MSFT is putting on the Win7 XP Mode appliance including the VT-xxx requirement.

Since things like VirtualBox are free and known to be better performing than MSFT VirtualPC, it's really a non-issue except for a clueless Auntie Mame who depends on MSFT for everything.

Maybe not everyone wants to bother trying to set up the largely complicated Virtual Machines; I'm pretty sure not everyone working in a business would know how to set one up, and most people don't want to learn either. Its just supposed to be a simple solution that works.

    That's what I think anyway.

Umm, it's not that complicated to set up a Virtual Machine nowadays.

In VMware, it's File -> New -> click Next a bunch of times -> click Finish -> come back in half an hour. That's not really any harder than (or even any different from) installing a program...

As for the VT issue, the Virtual PC installer will block you from installing it if VT isn't detected. But then, both of you (Tinderbox (UK) and Blaze-Senpai) have VT-capable CPUs anyway, no?

So Virtual Machine will not work either without VT being present and enabled , so why mention it?

The whole point of this thread is to inform people about what they will miss out if they dont have a VT enabled system in W7.

Let me turn off VT on my computer and reboot.

UPDATE: It does not work with VT disabled.

I was pretty sure Microsoft made that announcement explicit at some point. XP mode uses the virtualization extensions (present on almost all AMD CPU's, but only on higher-end Intel CPUs), so there is no way that it will work without them. Just as a note, many Sony laptops have VT-enabled CPUs, but they are disabled in the BIOS, so XP mode won't work on those, either.

Hopefully once Win7 is released manufactures will start releasing VT enabled bios for notebooks with an VT enabled processors.

Or once the complaints begin that people cannot get Xp mode to work , and they find they dont have a VT capable processor or it`s disabled in the bio`s.

It's available on ALL AMD CPU's (except on good old Socket 939 and older CPU's), and on all C2D CPU's except several models affecting high-end, med and low-end range)

FWIW, MSFT released 'XP Mode' version 1.0 a few days ago. The download is three files totaling around 1.5 Gb
