Iinstalled 64-bit Windows 7 Pro on my Acer AS1410. I put on C: right over the Vista install. The who process took less than an hour (~45-50 min). So far, everything seems to be working great with the exception of the scrolling features on the trackpad.

Now here's the bigger issue. My OS is now 57GB and it looks like there are a few left over applications from my Vista install. Still, my Windows folder is only 10.5GB and I don't see anything else that looks to be over a GB.

    Any ideas?

It's the windows.old folder, delete that and you will retain all your space back.

Really? It's only ~1-1.5 GB? I'll try it and post back. Thanks.

Okay, now that I opened it up, I can see the problem. The old Windows (Vista) folder alone is over 15GB plus the other folders...probably about 25gb or more in total.

Yeah seems like that did the trick. I'm down to 37GB now so it took about 21GB out. Still seems kind of large to me. Is this normal?

There are a few folders left in there that were put there before I bought the computer. Can I take those out too?

Depends on what are inside those folders.

If you just installed Win 7 and don't mind burning a bit of time, it may be worth while to reinstall Win 7 again, but make sure to format the hard drive when selecting where Win 7 will be installed. I made the same mistake as yourself, fortunately the second installation only took 20 mins total - a lot quicker than installation to the Vista partition, as it need to build the windows.old folder.

Not much in there. A generic user manual that Acer put there and a few logs that seem to have been used to test the system when it was built.

The only one that I'm not sure about is that there are two Program Files. One is marked x86 which was just installed. The other one is from July. I bough the computer in September so that is obviously from Vista. Would Windows 7 have any use for those?

I though the drive was going to be formated, so this has me slightly confused. Did 7 use parts of Vista? I installed 64-bit 7 over 32-bit Vista.

I personally don't think it is worth the time. But if you got free time to spare....

I like to waste time. I kind of reminds me of the old days in Linux (or even a bad day with any OS.) :)

I'm actually doing an experiment with the recovery partition right now anyway. Reloading Vista (I think). Talk about wasting time. lol

Thanks for all of the help. I'll let you guys know how it goes.

It only took 20 minutes from the time I booted the install USB to my desktop and my install is down to 10.5 GB. About the same time it took me to install Ubuntu 9.10. Nice!

Now I have to go fix my Grub menu so I can get into Linux again. Thanks for all of the help.
