I have some .mkv video files that I'd like to convert into other formats. I tried installing Handbrake but for some reason it crashes as soon as I try to load one of my files.

So I'm looking for a decent (preferably free) video conversion software that is compatible with Windows 8.1. Any suggestions?

    Thank you!

    Try Feemake Video Convertor.

    http://www.freemake.com/

EDIT: make sure you untick blotware when you install it.

Have you tried AVIDemux? I currently use it for video conversion for the clients that I record, I always had a problem with Handbrake.
