I am after a video ripping program for business/company use. I am planning to purchase it if the trial version works out.

I need to dvd rip police interviews/search warrants to the following format:
    -.WMV 8.0 Video format
    -320x240
    -1500kbps

Audio needs to crystal clear for typists to transcribe properly so at least:
    -.WMA 8
    -96kbps (near cd quality)
    -44100 sample rate
    -2 Channel Stereo

Right now im just using a simple dvd audio extractor which encoding takes under 1/2 the time of the videos length which is quick because its only ripping audio.

Id like to add video so the typists can see and transcribe better and know who is speaking. This will also make their jobs somewhat more exciting

I tried a Video converter called Cucusoft Ultimate DVD converter but encoding takes nearly twice as long as the videos length which is pretty dissapointing I noticed that it slows down alot when im doing more stuff like surfing the net while encoding

I need a solution that will let me rip audio/video to the format above that will only take 1/2 the time of the videos length. Is this possible?

Ive also tried a couple of the free software on the sticky but some crashed my computer or didnt have the exact format i needed. I figured Ipod video converters might work but im not sure if other formats will work with our propriety media player here in the office

    Thanks

Have you tried using the Windows Media Encoder? It can convert .avi files that these DVD rippers give you to .wmv files. If you want another ripping program to experiment with, try Handbrake.

Alternatively, if you have a fast internet connection you can convert the .avi files to .wmv online using http://www.mediaconverter.org/. They have a 100mb limit though (but you can use a program like virtual dub to quickly break up the file beforehand)

Cheers Ill give handbrake a try. I checked the website and looks promising from the screenshots i saw. I just gotta check if MP4, MKV, AVI or OGM is compatible with our properiety media player

I just need a program that will convert a DVD (.vob format?) straight to the .wmv format above as fast as possible for better productivity. Hopefully handbrake is the answer

Due to the sensitivity of the videos, it cant be put in the internet.

Don't know if Camtasia Studio will help in your project.... I've used this for years for my CD and online videos, and audio ebooks. Great program.....

If you want a free program try DVD-WMV at http://dvd-wmv.com/

If you want a (not free) program with more capability and faster processing try DVDFab at http://dvdfab.com/

It's not free, but it's regularly updated, offers avi, mpeg, wmv, divx, xvid, mp4, etc. It can also do audio only rips and it can be set up to perform multiple rips/transcodes at once.

I tried dvdfab before, when i installed it it kept giving me errors about NET Frameworks 2.0 so i gave up.

I just tried Handbrake, seems to be a very neat open source program. Lightning quick conversion on this laptop. I dunno if it will perform the same encoding times compared to my AMD Sempron+1gbram+XPpro @ work

Anyone here use FTR reporter/recorder or TheRecordPlayer?

Windows media encoder is really good software for converting video/audio... although it may take a few tries to figure out the settings once you figure it out it produces excellent quality conversions and it is also free!

    Sounds very promising.

No, Handbrake only does it to the formats you mentioned above and it's fairly quick. If you are patient enough you can take Handbrake's .avi file and then use the Windows Media Encoder to convert them to wmv for free. Timewise, it probably be like 40% longer than the video based on your computer.

Also, if you don't mind my asking, why can't you use a different media player? Is it like a kiosk station?

I would be very careful when choosing this type of software. Some of these programs contain a bunch of spyware so beware!

I would recommend caution when choosing this type of software. although this one seems to be ok (says its certified spyware free), some of the lesser known programs can be loaded with spyware.

Handbrake works but its quite slow. I think it is my workstation here.

Im getting an avrage of 80fps encoding with my laptop but im only getting 23fps on this integrated graphics card. I guess ill have to purchase an AGP gpu card to speed things up

You could also try lowering the framerate to 12-15 fps to speed up conversion time. A high framerate isn't critical for the stenographers, is it?
