I am currently in need of some decent video programs that can handle a wide range of media types. I am using Vista and it has Media Direct, Windows Media Player and VLC Player on it, however only Media Direct is able of opening some of my downloaded video files proper, or play my dvds smoothly. However even that program is having difficulty opening some of my .avi files. Does anyone have any programs or codexs that could expand one of my current programs or give me a better one? Freeware is preferred but if no other options are available I can try to purchase a commercial one.

A codex is a Classical or Scriptural book. A Codec is a way to Code/Decode a video or audio file. You need to probably use the K-Lite Codec pack (it's easier to search using the correct terms), or something similar. AVI's are known as a container format, and they can contain video encoded with any kind of codec, so it really depends on your videos.

playing a media file "smoothly" depends on lots of factors:
. how the media was created (resolution ...)
. system specs (gpu driver, ram, speed, hdd ...)
ur system specs? loading ur system with lots of codecs would not always solve the issue with playing media files "smoothly" nor being able to open them

Also, make sure you have the latest graphics drivers. That will help with MPEG-4 and DVD issues sometimes. And not being able to open an AVI is almost ALWAYS due to not having the correct codec, assuming that the program doesn't crash and that the file isn't corrupt.

Where do I find the K-Lite? And thanks for the corrections there.
