If I have a video stream (e.g. YouTube, Yahoo, etc.) open in a browser my Thinkpad often freezes so I can't switch to another program or do anything besides wait.

Sometimes I can get enough control to launch another window but then often the stream get stuck like a vinyl record (how many people don't know what I am talking about LOL) where the same five seconds of audio are played over and over and over for anywhere between 1-2 minutes.

Is this normal for Windows XP Professional?

I have a Thinkpad T42, 1 GB RAM, ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 with 32MB RAM, all the latest updates to the machine and Windows XP.

Not really normal, no. You should probably try reinstalling Flash. You might also consider installing Firefox, and see if it happens in both Firefox and IE.

It's happening in both Firefox and IE. I'll reinstall flash and see what happens.

It's good to know that's it not normal Microsoft behavior.
