Is there any freeware that can do this? I have a PAL DVD given to me and I would like to see it on my DVD player rather than my computer.

You can use nero to convert it.
    I have done it.
You will have to create your own menu though.

u can try to verify/set ur dvd player to support region code free - some players allow the set-up via a key sequence on the remote control

    cheers ...

I would prefer not doing that but its a consideration. On the other hand, its also not free.

It's is a formatting issue not a region issue as I have software that can do that. It's also a freaking Sony DVD player which makes it worse.

NTSC video is 720 x 480 pixels. PAL video is 720 x 576. Not all DVD players support both.

I am interested in purchasing the Sony DAV-X1 which is a complete but compact HTIB that meets my space requirements. I own a lot of non-Region 1 DVD's that I converted to Region 1 and I would like to make new NTSC copies that I can see on this player.

Ideally I want to preserve the original DVD menus and extra bits but my research is showing that there is no cheap software that can do this and I may have to revert to using an online service.

The other problem you will have is framerate. NTFS and PAL use different framerates and when you convert it gets choppy. Your best option is to buy a DVD player that plays both PAL and NTSC. They can be had for under $100, and will give you the best result.

It seems nobody except Luar understands what hes talking about :)
Regardless if the video plays or not, if the PAL video is watched on a NTSC display or vice versa it look distorted unless the video was reencoded and converted to the standard format.

Wow that's a lot of work. At this point I think I rather convert the DVD to an NTSC files and then create a DVD with 5 minute chapter intervals.

i m a bit confused here about the issue

i own a region free dvd player. i can play "pal" dvd, "ntsc" dvd, "asian" dvd, vcd , etc ....

i have a normal "ntsc" tv, and the output of the dvds (regardless of pal, ntsc or asian or whatever) is quite normal with all the menus available ... yes i do own a bunch of non-region 1 dvds myself

the only problem i have is all some of the dvds that i burn, that i can trace it back to the media type.

as far as Luar to-be Sony dvd player, it does exist a hack to make it region free, meaning then u can play non-region 1 dvds
    http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks.php?select=Sony+DAV-X1

on my laptop i use dvdidlepro (ligit licence), and i can via wmp or powerdvd watch any non-region 1 dvds as well

in my case, i have no need to copy back and forth, unless i want to make a b.u copy

    cheers ...

I have Phillips MPEG4/DVD player that plays both NTSC and PAL on NTSC TVs.

Re-encoding PAL/SECAM DVDs into NTSC DVDs is very cumbersome and it's extremely hard to get good result. Because not only is the frame rate and picture size different, but also the field order is reversed. So unless you employ services of a professional it will be hard to get a flawless result. With most 'consumer' programs (never mind a free one) the maximum you'll end up with is a mediocre result.

Even though I must admit that PAL/SECAM -> NTSC is better than the other way around.

After talking to a knowledgable salesman who told me that this Sony model was crap and that the company as whole is totally directionless (which I agree), I decided to get the Bose 321 GS of which I already knows plays my hacked DVDs.

As a follow-up, I bought the Bose 321. Yes it was expensive but it does everything I want and the quality of the video and audio is very good. Most importantly, it plays my PAL stuff without a problem.
