20 bucks says it gets delayed by 2+ years just like longhorn (aka vista).

    Have fun waiting 4 years.

It's just a codename. As the article says, MS isn't releasing the actual name... though I'm sure it'll be as "fun" as Wii (for instance).

Guaranteed that MS will delay it. They obviously want to reap some benefit from the OS that they took so long to release (Vista). It wouldn't make sense to quickly start hyping a new one right away. That is... unless Vista turns out to be ME part 2 (which I doubt).

Yup @ the most likely delay quotes.

But there is a slight chance that the momentum of technology might prove us wrong.

Vienna's a codename, but yeah, it doesn't sound so good. Even Longhorn sounded better.

Just so you know, Vienna was formerly codenamed Blackcomb, after the Whistler-Blackcomb ski resort near Vancouver (my home city).

Longhorn (Vista's codename) was named after a popular bar in Whistler-Blackcomb, and XP was codenamed Whistler, after Whistler-Blackcomb. They all have connections to my region! :D

Vienna was first announced in 2000. They've already delayed it :p.

For those of you who have Facebook, there are numerous groups started with "I like to play with my friend's Wii". How clever humans have become.

No.. i think late '09 is possible.. it seems to me Vista is a very hectic job just to counter OSX, they tune the new core up but ignoring the other stuff that ppl wants.. now they need to listen to ppl, to know wat ppl want. And mayb Vienna is definitely a better improvement, like from ME to XP.. generally i dun like OSs changes.. the longer it can stay, the happier i am...

i definetely agree with you. when we have to change OSs it can only cause more grief to us because 1) we have to spend loads more money to keep up with the latest OS "trends", and 2) we have to deal with all the problems of new OSs.

I dont think theres any chance Vienna will come out in 2 years (09) Remember Vista was originally scheduled for 04-05, but there really wasnt any demand for a new OS. Business especially will be slow to make any switch unlike when XP came when most people were excited about having a stable OS.

2-3 years? Sounds like a perfect time frame for me to upgrade! I presume my HP will hold out till then... which it should do after I spilt and watched squash seep through the keyboard.... and do nothing about it :p

Alas I bet when I do upgrade in that time it'll be a case of how good whichever Mac OS does Windows emulation vs Vista :p

Yeah hopefully I'll be able to skip Vista. Maybe Vienna will actually have some good new features, like an improved file system, or all the other useful, under-the-hood features originally planned for Vista that were scrapped in favor of gadgets and eye candy.
Actually if Wine continues to progress at the rate it is, I'll likely have switched to linux by then.

To all considering "skipping" Vista: We're looking at a good 4 years before the realistic possibility of another major OS launch from MS. If you want to wait 1/20 of your life for another OS, fine. Otherwise, try out Vista (MS has these trial offers I believe) or go OSX or some Linux implementation.
