The will all consume aprox the same amount of power. But usually the less resource hog is better.
Have you tried VLC, it is very light and can play almost any type of video or DVD. But it is a very basic player -
I think watching them from your HDD uses less power, I recomend BS Player for playing videos, especialy if you have a widscreen you get alot of options to get the video play and lookign how you want it to look

Blah guys, try The Core Media Player as I have said in the past.
Just give it a shot. Just as basic as VLC, but much better looking as you can set your own skins and it handles everything you throw at it with a couple codec downloads or a codec pack installation.
Doesn't get simpler than that, well maybe VLC is simpler, but that installs codecs as well and if you are installing codecs you might as well be installing the latest ones for compatibility.
Go to www.free-codecs.com and download the K-Lite Codec Pack or Mega Codec Pack. I have had a really great experience with this codec pack with not too many issues.
The Core Media Player + K-Lite Codec Pack = Great Video Watching Pleasure.
I would have to say that watching off your harddrive would drain less juice than watching off your optical drive. Watching videos do drain your battery quite more than normal surfing and music listening.
Cheers,

BSPlayer doesn't have any adware, as far as I know.
Unless they just added some recently.
Anyhow, I am downloading BSPlayer with K-Lite Mega Codec Pack, and that version comes without any adware for sure. -
