I need a VPN client I can use over an SSH account, so I can surf privately over wi-fi. Are there any recommendations, or alternatives for sending sensitive data over coffee shop type net connections?

I was using software called Safe Passage, but was disappointed to find out I can't use it on my new laptop, because it's against their "policies". I've never come across this before when buying software. Is it common? I don't want to keep buying the same software each time I have to change computers. I don't think this is fair on genuine users, so am looking for alternatives to Safe Passage.
