Early in the year there were rumors about an upgrade program by Microsoft and the major computer retailers. Microsoft would offer free upgrades to Windows 7 for anyone who purchased a computer after a certain date (rumored to be July 1). A few users on this board have mentioned it, but I can't find any official word on whether this plan is going forward. Has this program been confirmed, and if so, is the start date for eligibility known?

I don't think it's ever been made official. Seems like the July 1 date came from some internal documents or something, and thus subject to change. I imagine that no official upgrade window will be announced until the Windows 7 release date is actually finalized.

One thing is for certain, there WILL be a free upgrade window (there always is) and smart money says that it'll start in mid to late summer, assuming a fall Windows 7 general release.
