CCleaner is always nice to have. I used it on XP quite frequently

Registry cleaners are generally unnecessary, except in extreme situations.

Last time I looked, I was unable to find any tests published on the internet that showed any significant performance gain from using registry cleaners.

So... personally, I use no registry cleaner at all.

I use both of them. They often catch things that the others miss.

Why not use both? CCleaner's primary function isn't to clean the registry, it's to clean all the "crap" (temp files, etc) from the computer. AWC I use more for Windows issues, optimization and as an additional spyware scanner.

While they both can clean the registry, they have different and unique features. Plus, they are very dependable, quick, and effective. No reason not to install both.

CCleaner is pretty dependable. The one thing you have to be careful about Registry Cleaners, though, is that they aren't too aggressive. You can really mess up things if you're not careful.

Ed Bott's article is also an eye opener, btw.

I use both, but I've never had any problem with CCleaner. I've had to uncheck the registry cleaner on AWC b/c it messes up my Nota Bene program.

Performance gain? Maybe. Reliability gain? Definitely.

I can't show a graph proving this, but from experience I believe it to be true.

The registry is like the index to a very large book. The OS is like the reader of the book. Put yourself in that situation. You find a topic of interest in the index and it points to page 449. You go to look for page 449 but find it missing or contains a topic that is not what you were looking for.

    Just my .02!
