I see the weather app shows more information if I move it out of the sidebar. I'd like to see that information and maybe have my RAM/CPU monitor larger. Is there an easy way to make it 2x as wide or anything?

you can pull the objects out of the side bar and put them where ever you want.
-
i guess that it's not possible to change the width directly, but check this app... (note - i didn't try it.) http://www.ghacks.net/2007/08/19/windows-vista-sidebar-styler/

I don't think you can widen it. Though if you want, you can move the widgets out, close the "bar", and just let the widgets float around your desktop. That's what I do. Win-spacebar brings them up in front of any open windows.

Some gadgets, like the weather channel gadget doesn't work as expected when undocked from the side bar.

The weather one that comes with Vista works fine and actually is better undocked (provides more info).
The vast majority of gadgets work fine undocked, and some offer additional functionality when undocked too. -
-
When undocked, it doesn't show the current conditions. -
In fact, that's a reason for me not to try that gadget, but to get my weather info from other gadgets instead.
Vista - Can I make the sidebar wider?
