I have searched google and discovered that this is a common problem but of all the suggestions I have tried I still have the issue.

If I create a new folder and then try to rename it I get the following error:

"The file or folder does not exist"

This is a real pain in the rear end. I am having to create folders but because I am unable to rename them it's becoming really difficult to keep track of my files.

Has anyone had this and solved it? If so please, please help me out.

    Thanks

It means the folder isnt there :p

If what happened to me a few times is happening to you this is whats going on:

If you move or delete a file, for some reason it actually moves to the new location or is deleted but the icon for it will stay in place. If you attempt to delete the file or move it again it will say it doesnt exsist. However the new location wont have the icon for the file eather even tho its there.

So you have to refresh all the icons. I did it a few ways.... I think just logging off of your user name and logging back on was the easiest way I did it.

Then you should see the file actually where it is supposed to be. This only happened to me a few times when I first installed vista, it must be an error that has to do with vista indexing all the files.

Thanks for the reply. I will try your suggestion of logging off and on again although my machine has been shut down several times.

Also it's not exclusive to files/folders that may have been removed or deleted.

If I right click on the desktop for example and choose to create a new folder, the folder is created and the name highlighted to prompt renaming of the folder, I enter a new name and bang I get the error.

Thanks, gonna try logging off and on again now.

    *** Edit ***
Logging off and back on had no effect at all.

It seems that the problem I have could be with renaming folders only. I have tried to rename some of the desktop icons and other files and they all renamed ok.

As an example I have a folder on the desktop called "New Folder" within this folder I have a file called "Index.html". I can change the name of the file to "Index2.html" but I cannot rename the "New Folder" to "New Folder2" as I get the error "The file or folder does not exist"

    Thanks

I'm having the exact same problem. I just made a topic about it (before searching... sorry) so I'll go close that one and hope we can get an answer here. I can rename files, but I cannot rename folders - even folders that I just created using the New > Folder method.

want to give this a shot? (be very careful playing with regedit)

    - Create the parameters in:
    HKLM/System/CurrentControlset/Services/csc/parameters

    - within the parameters key, create a DWORD Value named FormatDatabase with a value of 1 (hex)

    - save & reboot the machine

    cheers ...

That didn't work for me. Then again, the CSC key didn't exist in my registry. So I made new keys CSC and Parameters. But alas, after my reboot, no dice.

well this is an old bug in the day of vista beta testing. it had to do with offline handling. at the time we could use this tweak or just disable the offline file support within vista. try that also if u want

    cheers ...

Are there any more fixes for this issue? I just reformatted again, and the only thing I've done so far is install some 29 Windows Updates. And one of them is messing up my folder renaming! Like I said before, the key value "csc" isn't in my registry, so I can't use that workaround.

Please, any help would be great! I can't even get my start menu organized like I want anymore because I can't put all those random Windows programs into one folder unless it's named New Folder.

    Ugh.

I read on another forum that the problem is with Offline Files and that this fix should work:

Control Panel > Classic View > Offline Files > Disable Offline Files > Reboot

However, this doesn't work for me as Offline Files is not in my Control Panel! I'm using a vLite version of Vista Ultimate, so I'm thinking that maybe the reason the key "csc" and offline files are missing is that I removed/disabled Offline Files. But, this does seem to be a pretty widespread issue (2000, XP, and Vista) and there's no official fix for it yet.

Hmmm, do you think this just MIGHT have soemthing to do with the problem? Why not try a real Vista Ultimate rather than one that someone attmpted to pare down?

Well, I did it myself, and I've been using this version for at least 6 months. This is a brand new problem (a week or two), so I don't think that my version of Vista is making this error, but possibly that's why Offline Files and "csc" aren't there. However, I have read in other forums that other versions of Vista (ie Business) don't have Offline Files in the Control Panel either.

I still haven't found a fix for this but I do know that this problem is caused by 1 of the microsoft updates for vista.

I do not know which update is causing the problem but this issue has been around for a while so microsoft should has a bloody fix for it by now.

Well, if it counts for anything. A few nights ago I uninstalled all of the "recommended" updates for Vista and that didn't fix the problem. So I reinstalled them all, but haven't gotten around to uninstalling each of the "important" updates. Let me know if you find anything else out.

qhn! That worked perfectly! I just downloaded and ran that reg file. I didn't have csc in my parameters still. But after a restart, it's working like a charm. Thanks so much!
