    Hi.

I haven't got a DVD burning software on my SZ with Vista. I tried to install Roxio Toast but that didn't work and I downloade the latest Nero Trial from their website which states its' compatible with Vista.

However when it installs, it requests me to install DirectX 9.0c where I already have ver. 10 installed cause of Vista. So I thought surely Vista needs ver.10 and it should be backwards compatible? So I denied installing the ver. 9.0c but it quits the entire installation.

What should I do or what other good/easy programms can I use?

    Thanks. :)

Download RipIt4Me to backup your DVDs (it requires installed copies of DVDShrink and DVDDecrypter). As for good burning software, I use ImgBurn. It's small, fast, and unobtrusive. BTW all of these programs are Freeware, try 'em and if you don't like them you've lost nothing.

You could try Nero. The trial version is the full version until it expires.

Installing the DirectX 9.0C runtime in Vista will not overwrite DX10, the program just requires some files from DX9 that are lacking in DX10. Once installed, you will find that Vista still has DX10 intact. I had to do this already in Vista Ultimate.

Very true. In fact, Vista includes both DirectX 10 and a special version of DirectX 9.0C (usually called 9.0L for "longhorn") as DX10 isn't backward compatible. But they don't install all the updatd DirectX 9 bi-monthly .dll files that they release for each update. Since MANY programs (especially games) require a specific .dll file to function, you need to allow the setup programs to install DirectX as necessary. As another option, you can grab the DirectX April 2007 Update Redist from here which will update both DirectX 9 and 10 on Vista systems (or just DirectX 9 on XP systems), and will install all the .dll files various programs and games may call upon.

Oh, yeah. And Nero works great in Vista. Hope that helps.

Hey hey - thanks guys for all the comments. I shall try out the Nero Trial and install the DirectX - wasn't sure if I wanted to mess around with the drivers before I asked you guys. Wonder if the free stuff is any good. :p I'll give them a shot cause I don't really want to pay for a full program. Let you know how it goes :)!

Keep in mind that double clicking the DirectX 9 installer will just extract the files to a location you specify. After extraction, you must go to the location and find the setup file to begin actual installation.

Yeh and I made the mistake of not creating a folder first - what a dump of files on my desktop when I extracted it. :p

Well installed Direct9X or that file linked above and installed Nero7 Premium fine!! All working now. =) Very cool. Thanks guys. Another problem perfectly solved.
