My laptop is running Windows Vista (Home Premium) and I was wondering how I could remotely access it through my campus? I'm fairly sure it does not just have a "Remote Desktop" application.

You are correct. Both Vista Home Basic and Vista Home Premium do not have the Remote Desktop feature. You'll definitely need to find a 3rd party solution. There are many, but your campus firewalls might keep some of them from working. Keep in mind that you will need a solution that does not require that you accept the connection at your laptop. Many solutions require that the connection be accepted manually. Google "VNC".

AFAIK .Vista Premium does have the Remote Desktop application; but it can only be used to connect to other computers; That is, you cannot connect to it, but you can connect from it.

I use Logmein Remote Desktop on Vista Home Premium. Works flawless. Try that if you want a 3rd party solution.

new and free from microsoft, will work on all editions of Vista and XP:

    www.mesh.com

remote desktop application and file backup. Check it out!

I'm writing my thesis and having such an easy to use and free backup solution really saves the day for me. One of my associates just lost his entire Macbook HDD and wasn't backing up "because I have a mac" lol.

LogMeIn is definitely a great product. VNC also works well, but LogMeIn is far easier to use.

Sounds like he was a victim of smugness.

Home premium does have Remote Desktop. It can RDP out, it just cant RDP in

I use it to connect to my XP notebook all the time.

    +1 for LogMeIn.
I have to add UltraVNC though, for local network it works better IMHO.

I just read the instructions that come with my Vista Home Premium and it says "You cannot use Remote Desktop Connection to connect to remote computers running Windows XP."

Is this not really true? because this seems like an easy solution for remote access.

    thanks,
    Marianne

XP Pro you can. I use RDC to connect to my servers with Server 2003 and Server 2008 without a problem.

Try TeamViewer for Remote Connections or You Could use Remote Assistance

Note : Make sure you tell Teamviewer to accept only Lan Connections .

Yeah, I like Live Mesh, but had to switch to LogMeIn Free. As it turns out, the Live Mesh remote desktop app currently relies on an ActiveX control in IE. This makes remoting into my laptop a no go from any of my uni's computer labs. Just something to keep in mind when going to "Public" machines. ;)

Hopefully they will add a java client soon, because I liked how well integrated it was, and LogMeIn always causes my laptop to bluescreen, letting me down a bunch of times....

My university allows ActiveX on all the public computers so I didn't think of that. I am doubtful that MS will release a java client any time soon, but who knows!
