We all know that shutting down, starting up, and coming back from stand by was a pain with XP, but will it be faster with Vista?
When starting up and shutting down, will it be as fast as a Mac?
-
I'm pretty sure Vista as an OS is snappier and quicker than XP in general... I don't have first hand experience however.
-
yes, its way faster. the start up is really cool too. its shows the new vista logo

Start-up and wake-up seems much faster, as does a sleep/hibernate, but on the flip side, a full shut-down seems to take much longer.
This is just what I 'feel' after running it for a while, not any specific tests or timed start-ups/shut-downs. -
Would having a really good processor and a lot of memory make a difference?
-
Well I think 1 gb is enough unless you wanna game heavily... and you don't really need an amazing processor, but a new core duo or whatever amd is probably the best choice.

To the OP, startup on Vista is much faster, but Vista doesn't really want to be shut down... it wants to be put to sleep, which is pretty much instantaneous, as is wakeup. -
Well, will putting it to sleep over shutting it down more often hurt your computer, like it did with XP's?

Running Vista 64 bit here on my S96J. OS cold start is faster than XP, resuming from "Sleep" is almost instantaneous while providing what I understand to be a lower power state than standby during sleep. Shutting down is faster, but I suspect this is due to the fact that my copy of XP has the Vista Transformation Pack installed which slows down XP's shutdown process.
Starting 32 bit applications is quicker in general---Steam for example definitely starts faster---although performance during actual execution may be reduced due to new or un-optimized drivers for your hardware. I do not have any 64bit apps to compare with.
Vista -- does it startup and shut down faster?
