Update May 11 2009. Now works for Laptops+OEM
Hey, I searched everywhere on this forum and internet. Somone said Microsoft will send you Vista 64 for 10 bucks if you already have Vista 32. I found this link
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/1033/ordermedia/default.mspx
It looks like that's it. I have a problem, it says my key is invalid.Does anybody has any luck with it?
P.S. I heard something like if you already registered vista as 32, then you can't get 64...![]()

TO SUMMARIZE THE DISCUSSION
1) If you have bought Vista in the store: Looks like you can follow the link above and Vista 64 will be shipped to you for small $$$.
If you have problem with activating using your serial number, see the trick for laptops below.
2) If you have a laptop and have serial key. You can't use the link above.
-How to get Installation DVD?
As we found out downloading Vista as a torrent, burning it on DVD and using it illegal. Even if you download an unhacked version and use your legal CD key.![]()
But what you can do is get Vista 64 DVD from a friend, and when installing it, use your key from you Vista 32 (there should be a sticker at the bottom of your laptop).
-Trick-How to activate using your serial number?
Some ppl may have problems with activating with their number. Here is why: You need to install the same Service pack (Sp0-initial release, SP1, and I guess, SP2). So, if your 32 bit laptop came, preinstalled with SP1 and you got Vista SP0 64 bit installation DVD, then it won't activate.
You have to: Start installation, do not enter your serial, press activate later. Install 64 bit. Connect to internet. Upgrade to SP1! Only after that can you enter your serial and activate. It worked for me.
P.P.S. If you successfully done it or failed, plz post here.

I had the same issue with my oem business edition. I gave up thinking because it was an oem license

ONLY retail keys work for that. The OEM key that's preinstalled with your laptop as well as the key on the bottom of your laptop don't work. -
-
And downloading a Vista .iso not from Microsoft directly is illegal, so don't bring it up again. -

Just to make things clear :
If I buy a GT627-218US which comes with a Vista 32-bits OS. Will I have to buy the full OEM copy in order to have the 64-bits version, or will I be able to take the key from under the laptop and grab a friend's Vista x64 installation to install it? -
The key from my laptop didn't work for me, so, I guess, you'll have to buy 64.
-
Yay, it finally worked for my laptop.
The trick is: you need to have same SP 64 as your laptop came with. See first post.

I did this long ago, like Crash said only a retail key gives you rights to both 32bit and 64bit versions.
OEM and system builder and all that are single version single machine licenses.
All retail keys are good for both versions, it just so happens they only supply you with the 64bit disk if you cough up the $$$ for Vista Ultimate.
However ALL VISTA DISKS ARE THE SAME, just the key tells the disk what to version to install on your system, one disk is 64bit, one disk is 32bit.
So you can barrow a friends 64bit ultimate disk and install 64bit home premium on your computer just fine if you like, and legally you can copy the 64bit disk or even download it as you own rights to the disk via your license/purchase of a retail copy of Vista.
This $10 disk thing from MS they say they are only charging for the S&H, but the disk itself is free as you already "own" it. (because we all know it takes $10 to ship a disk....) -

I have used that site.... I DO NOT RECOMMEND IT!
They gave me four options. One was Vista Ultimate x64 CD and 3 different Upgrades to Vista Ultimate x64 DVD. I picked Home Premium to Ultimate x64 DVD. What did they shipped me? A 32-bit dvd!!!! I was so angry. I called the support number and the lady was just plain awful/no-help.
I wanted a vista installed disc with sp1 integrated. In the end, I paid $17 (i picked the fastest shipping) for a new Ultimate cd key... I ended up just downloading the Vista Ultimate install disc with sp2 integrated. -

Well, this is not worthy for sure.
I just download the 64bit Vista all-in-one Installer. Burn it to a disc or make a bootable USB.
Put in the disc or bootable USB and install it.
Type-in your license key, the Vista will know which version your license key is apply to.
However, I encounter problem when activating the license key after the installation. What I do was type-in "nothing"(I tried the real license key but fails) to the license key box(when it said wrong key) and then the Windows activated. LOL. I saw my real license key got activated there(even I didn't type-in anything). I guess this is a bug. -
Could you tip me where to dl it? Clean installation disk, no hacked stuff. I do have a licence.
