I think my codecs are out of date and need to be replaced...cuz screen image quality while watching videos isnt quite what i expect from an HD laptop screen (1080p).

Is there anyone who could recommend the best codecs for my system? Im not an expert in this domain so please ask if you need assistance with anything

The put two things on my systems: Matroska splitter and ffdshow. No codec packs touch my computers.

I heard that some codecs had a negative impact on some games. Such as ffdshow, i had bad experiences with that.

    Does K-lite contain ffdshow?

Yeah it does, but it asks you if you want ffdshow or not when you install it.

Is it recommended for games? while having a good codec pack i dont want it to have a negative impact on my online gaming (ie lag..or anything like that)

A codec pack affecting gaming? o_O Codecs are just libraries called when they are asked for. What's that have to do with gaming?

I use the Vista Codec Pack. It runs everything I need, and it's updated frequently.

ffdshow works fine on Vista. Infact they even have a fully working 64bit codec pack for it, you need the ffdshow tryouts.

I use ffdshow in place of microsofts codecs for vista media centre, they are better for sound decoding simply because I can add a delay to the sound to bring lip sync back in line (bug in TV pack on 50Hz displays using MS MPEG2 codec)

As others have stated, ffdshow works with Vista. Are you using the old ffdshow (you shouldn't be - latest build 12 Oct 04) or the ffdshow-tryouts (you should be - latest build 1 Dec 08)?

Hmmm, so DVD didn't bring progressive scan to the home theater? Quite odd that you don't think DVD has progressive scan - perhaps you don't own an upconverting DVD player with component video and/or HDMI outputs? I think you should do some reading to help understand how interlaced and progressive scan work on computers and home theater equipment.
