Is basic 32x, and if so is it compatible with older software more so in the sense it is like XP or not?

32bit Vista are generally compatible with most hardware and software. But due to the changes in Vista, they may not work.

Each edition (basic/premium/biz/ultimate) is available in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions.

The 32-bit versions of Vista have a higher degree of compatibility with older software, although both should work with most reasonably recent programs.

Only the Ultimate has the x64 option. The others are 32 bits.

No, there are 32/64 bit versions of all Vista editions as mentioned above. It is just that most laptop manufacturers(like HP) only offer 64bit in Ultimate and 32bit versions of the rest. If you get the full retail box of Vista then Ultimate includes both versions in the box while if you buy the other versions you will have to request for the 64bit media from MS.

erm I'm using Vista Home Premium 64bit unless I'm going mad and have dreamt the whole thing! ;)

Just to save opening the link here's a quote "The 64-bit editions of Windows Vista—available for all editions of Windows Vista except Starter—deliver premier performance, reliability, and security, providing you access to the next generation of PC innovations."

kanehi should be referring to the option of 64bit and 32bit software in the Ultimate package. For other versions, 64bit media have to be ordered seperatedly (or borrow from a friend if he has one ;))

32bit Vista is more software and hardware (drivers) compatible right now. That will continue you to get better for the 64bit side of things. If you dont need the few benfits that 64bit offers (most dont) then going 32 bit is less of a hassle in the long run.

Older software can choke on 32bit Vista if it does not work well with UAC and needs to be run by a full administrator and not a limited administrator account that UAC presents. On 64bit it can choke because of UAC or because its not compatible with a 64bit OS.

Vista64 has a 32bit compatibility layer that is supposed to do all the work. It makes the app think it is running in a 32bit environment if the app needs 32.
