my dad is flipping a *edited* about 64-bit vista. he claims that the chipset and processor for 64-bit is different from 32-bit, and that most games (crysis, etc) wont run on 64-bit.

    please respond to the following:

    are his claims true?

can i replace 64-bit with 32-bit if I want to?

    thanks for the input

    yeah your dad is flippin.

most 32bit application and games will run fine on x64 since it has an emulation layer

64bit Operating Systems are mostly compatible with 32bit applications. If they are not compatible out of the box, you could force compatibility by changing the application's compatibility settings.

Unless said 32bit program needs a 32bit driver installed or is some security suite that is highly dependent on the 32bit OS...you are probably fine.

The best thing I can say is install Vista64, then install all your stuff and try it out for a bit before activating any software.

This used to be true with the Intel Itanium processor platform. However, 64 bit CPUs these days work fine with either 32 or 64 bit. Vista x64 does a great job handling both as well, just nothing lower than 32 bit.

In AMD64-land (which is where all Windows-running systems live now), the chipset and processor are different, but they are all 64-bit and capable of also running in 32-bit. This is how most modern systems are, if you bought a new one today. However, this switch was recent enough that a machine older than a year or more might not be able to handle 64-bit. The Intel "Core" CPU was 32-bit only, but the "Core 2" are 64-bit. If you have a Core 2, then the chipset should support 64-bit as well.

Just installed 64bit on my 1520 and I had all the presumptions about 64bit OS's that your dad did. To be completely honest I was very hesitant about putting Vista 64 on but after a lot of research and TONS of help from NBR (thank you!!) I am totally happy with Vista 64 and F.Y.I., I have played Bioshock and Crysis on this OS. I would not ever switch to 32bit OS again.

I have 64bit Vista Ultimate on my T61p and the only software I have had trouble with was stuff I needed to mod my system. Pretty much all regular software and games are 64bit compatible.

Crysis comes on a disc containing both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the game. Either should run on Vista x64.

What other games does your dad play?
