I just bought a ASUS F3SV X4
Which has the Merom T7500 (Intel Core 2 Duo 2.20)
Which I read is a 64 bit processor.
I see in order to get a 64 bit operating system you must buy the entire operating system new. I do not think that this Laptop comes with the 64 version of Vista, So I am a little troubled at the $300 price tag on a new copy of Vista.
So my question is this, is a 64 bit operating system really worth it?
I intend on upgrading the ram in this Laptop to 4 gigs eventually(It will be upgraded to 2 gigs immediately)

It is worth it. You can buy a copy of the Windows Vista Anytime Upgrade DVD for 5$ and use your own serial (which will come with the laptop) to install the operating system.
-
No you can't. That's only if you have a retail copy of Vista. The preinstalled OEM copy doesn't have 64-bit upgrade rights.
It's not worth it if you have to purchase Vista. 32-bit is fast enough anyways. -
He is correct. Microsoft Reports:

This does not bode well for me. How dreadful. I was really looking forward to it. But honestly the laptop I purchased isn't worth buying a whole additional operating system for, it's only a ASUS F3SV-X4. Which by this time next year will be a low-range power laptop.
I suppose I will have to deal with a maximum of 2 gigs of ram. Ah well... -
get your 4 gigs of ram with your OS, then you can buy an OEM copy of vista.
microsoft will sell OEM to consumers but they need to buy a 'new' pc component a.k.a your ram.
it is not THAT bad here is a canadian place to buy it.

~207, the price in the US will be cheaper, always is. -
As an interesting point. I just learned my school offers a -free- copy of Vista Business, Perhaps I can gather a 64 bit upgrade from that.
Also:
Yuio,
Thank you for your response, I did not know Vista could be found for so cheap. The few sources I checked reported 300+ for the operating system, I suppose I was misinformed. How ever, at the end of the day I'm a college kid with an extremely limited budget.
This laptop is the last major purchase I can make, How ever, I thank you for your input.
Finally:
Did you say Vista 32 bit is capable of supporting 4 gigs of ram? The laptop I currently own does not read anything over 2 gigs (which was supprizing considering when I had XP on it, it read 2.5 gigs even though the laptop itself didn't[Isn't supposed to] support anything more than 2, Haha) even after tweaking the system memory options in the msconfig (In fact, When Tweaked, the settings always return to normal, Perhaps I should "run as Administrator" I hadn't thought of that until just now) -
or in the US '

36$ each ram

111$ for vista...
183$ for the whole thing.
Edit: glad to help. -
Your school will likely give you 32bit AND 64bit vista business.
-
The serial will work. Who the hell are we not to take advantage of that if Microsoft lets us to?
-
I certainly hope so. Either way.
Thank you all for your responses. I do so love this forum.
I am posting this from my new F3SV X4
Bloatware removed, it's a pretty speedy machine. Needs more RAM though.
I expect to give a full review in one month. -
It's not officially supported, but I think it will work. (You won't be able to do an in-place upgrade though... you'd have to wipe and reinstall.) Search the forums though... there have been some discussions on this.
No, Microsoft dropped that requirement a while back. You can now buy OEM Windows without buying any hardware with it.
