    Hi,

The Vostro 1400 comes with a choice of business of ultimate editions. For an extra £50 ($100) I can go to vista ultimate. Is it worth it? What are the advantages?

Also, how much is it to upgrade from business to ultimate myself if I wanted to in the future?

My gut tells me I should stick with Business, is that what you guys think?

    Matt

Considering that you are buying a Vostro, is this for business or for leisurely things like gaming and web surfing?

An upgrade to Ultimate is ~$240 if you buy the upgrade version, or you can fresh install with an OEM version (Does not allow transfer of license) for ~$190, .

It would be for student use primarily, which is half business half leisure (usually at the same time :D)

    1.8Ghz C2D, 2GB, Probably the x3100, 120gb.

Thanks for the link. The only thing I think I will miss is the media centre...but then I already use 3rd party software on XP, I dont see why I cant keep it that way.

Are you planning to use the 3rd party software on Vista? If so, make sure they are 100% compatible.

One problem with the x3100 is that it might use up some system RAM, which is probably far and few since you are running Vista. If you do want to use Vista make sure you take that no bloatware option from Dell. Some people have run into Dell or HP Vista laptop thats using up 400 or more MB of system RAM, which is incredible high. The x3100, however, is a great graphic unit as stated in other threads. It can play FEAR with ok FPS around 20.

If you can live without all that media stuff then stick with Business. Ultimate is not so great right now. There are barely any "Extras" and some of Ultimate features such as Bitlocker are quite useless, plus is slows down the computer.

You might want to get what other NBR members think, though.

There's almost nothing useful in "Ultimate" (hah!), as stated. If you're dead set on Vista, waste/spend as little money as possible, and go with Business.

Sorry for the lack of reply before now and thanks for the posts. I would have quite liked the media features as I am a "media" person - specifically DVDs and music i do a lot of. However, I can't justify spending £50 on it and some chess games...

Qhs, you say the upgrade is $240? Is that from XP to Ultimate or Buisness to Ultimate? (through "any time upgrade"?)

For £60 i can put the dedicated graphics in, but since I'm not a gamer I don't know if i can quite justify that either...

    I'm on tight budget.

No the $240 is the retail Ultimate (32 and 64bit in one DVD) upgrade. It goes from Windows XP (Windows XP Professional, Windows XP Home, Windows XP Media Center, Windows XP Tablet PC, Windows XP Professional x64) or Windows 2000 to Ultimate.
