I have a dell laptop, that came preinstalled with Vista Business 32bit, so I also have the OEM sticker on the bottom of it. I want to purchase Windows 7 Professional 32bit Upgrade DVD as a student, so my question is: As I want to clean install win 7 (formatting C:/) do I need to have Vista installed on the hard drive? Does it ask for the Vista Product key during the win 7 installation?

    Thank you.

Launch the installation from Vista and proceed normally, until you can choose Custom installation instead of Upgrade. You can then delete the partition/format it etc, whatever you want like doing clean install.

Downside of the upgrade is, you need always to install Vista first and then Win7 upgrade. At least when going by the book :)

You can do a clean install with the upgrade DVD. Boot from the DVD to start the process. The installation doesn't ask for Vista product key.
