Hi all,
just purchasing new vostro 1400. I have a choice of (only) Vista Business, Vista Ultimate (32 bit). I will have 3gb RAM 2.2ghz cpu (dual core).
Are both Vista versions the same as far as gaming is concerned? My only other use is internet/basic office stuff. So if gaming performance is same on Business version as with 32bit Ultimate i can't see why i would want to pay an extra £50 to get ultimate? I looked at the comparison tickbox on microsoft's website and only real difference seems to be if i want to do video-editing which i don't.
Also would it be worth it trying to find a cheap copy of xp from somewhere and uninstalling vista/re-installing that? Is this easy enough to do? Have heard Vista just uses up more memory..???

Business doesn't have media centre. You also need to enable the MS built in games through add or remove programs as they aren't enabled by default. You're apparently not supposed to want to play them, it's aimed at businesses. I have Vista Business 32 bit and it works fine for me with all the gaming I do, World in Conflict, C & C 3, LOTR BFME 2 and such.

Ultimate isn't worth your cash. Go with Business. Most of the Ultimate features aren't worth it IMO. Bitlocker is picky about HDD's and the Ultimate extra's are far and few between.
I've got Home Premium and its just fine. I game on it and use it for MS Office and multimedia. The Vostro was offered by Dell with XP Pro, so maybe if you call them you can get XP right away.

I had vista business and frankly i dont really utilise any of the features...such as the backup option as it consolidates all files and the outcome is compressed in a file format that only windows can read....i prefer to use 3rd party software to do a backup...gaming? well...i played cod4, driver: parallel lines, vice city without any problem...only thing is that it would quit to windows after 1 hour plus of gaming...i think that was because of my graphics card driver...i used to have the xps m1330 with the nvidia 128mb 8400 card...if you want to do gaming, i think you should get a laptop with a good graphics card and use xp for the moment...

For that much of a price difference, its not worth getting UE. Actually, Home Basic might be best for gaming, since it is so completely stripped down, but that's just a guess on my part.
I only ended up getting UE because the price difference between BE and UE was 20$ (from Dell). I do sometimes use the Media Center capabilities, so maybe it was worth it. -
I use Home Premium and its just fine. I use it for gaming, multimedia and MS Office. I didn't think they ship the Vostro with Home Premium but you can always ask then about your options. Calling Dell always works better, at least for me. They can do alot if you call them.

For most users, Home Premium is more than enough. The highest you should take alook is Business as many features on Ultimate Edition is useless for most users.

I'm not sure if anyone mentioned it, but the performance is the same throughout all the versions. And yes, Home Premium is the one that worths it's money.

I'm getting a Vostro 1500, is Basic completely lacking compared to Premium?
I can live without Aero, but are there any glaring omissions? -
I use Vista Business, I never use the backup option, I went with the Acronis True Image for the backup solution.
And I added the Vista Built in games through control panel and enabled DreamScene through a Hack! i'm not missing out on ANYTHING! -
Basic omits the Media Center found in Home Premium. It's not a huge loss. I use it rarely if ever. My system just came with Home Premium. You should be fine and if you need it you can always upgrade later.

MaXimus777, it has Aero without hacks.
Home Premium has some nice features and it's not that expensive either. -
I never said anything about Aero? I said DreamScene!!!! -
I believe at first you said Aero before editing.
Vista Business/Ultimate better for gaming?
