Hello, I've never used Vista before and was wondering something.

I'm going to be heading to school this fall and will be needing all the applications of office and such and will likely be getting a Gateway P-7805u or similar model that has Windows Vista 64-bit Premium Edition.

Does this version have all the office software?
If it doesnt, should I get an office disk, OR should I flat out get a copy of Windows Vista 64-bit Ultimate Edition if that has it?
Would installing these over the Premium be simple?

    Thanks for your time :D

Vista (all flavors) has no office software bundled. The manufacturer might be offering a trial copy of Office/Works installed, but it's a better idea to just head to you campus bookstore and buy Office2007 there with your student discount. They should offer the best prices for retail copies.

Agreed....take advantage of your Student Discount on this. You won't pay anywhere near *full price* ;)

(Curses MS for their lack there of office!)

    Thanks though :)

Would Ultimate be worth it regardless though?

Probably not. Just stick with Home Premium, that'll do everything you'll ask of it. In addition, there has never been an Windows release that came bundled with Office that I'm aware of?

Some schools, like mine :( *glares* don't offer much of a discount on Office. I'd check with the bookstore first (perhaps shoot them an e-mail) and if it's more expensive than 60 bucks, I'd go with Microsoft's "The Ultimate Steal" program. ( www.theultimatesteal.com) Once you get your school email address, you can enter it on the website and get a link to a online store where you can buy Office 07 Ultimate (pretty much everything including the kitchen sink :p) for around 60 dollars. I did it and it worked just fine. Ordered a backup CD as well.

An alternative to $$ Microsoft Office is Open Office, running on most - if not all - platforms.

    cheers ...

    Just about Office:
Search for something called "the Ultimate Steal" - find the Microsoft website on it, if you have a valid university (educational) e-mailk adress you should be able to get office ultimate for 40$/€/Pounds

The offer "shuts down" over summer I think, then starts up again over the next term.
    ____________
Vista Ultimate - if you ask whether you need it, possiblky not.

    Although:
If you connect using Domain names you will need Vista Business or Ultimate as Home Premium will not support it.
Ultimate also offers a complete HDD backup...

(My Vaio came with vista Business - no other choice :) - and I stayed with it...)
