I have a Vista DVD but I guess it's damaged because it won't let me install. I have tried it on two seperate computers and I get an error about cannot extract or something.

I lost the packaging and everything...

Is there anyway to extract the key from the DVD using a program or anything? I have the Upgrade CD so I just want to get the key from the DVD and install it using the upgrade CD.

    Thanks. :)

Are you kidding? Lost the packaging? Call microsoft if you had legitimately bought that DVD.

Ya, theres no way to get the Key back if you lost the package.
And also, if your pirating, thats illegal and against forum rules.

No keys are saved on the retail discs (which are quite frankly all the same).

Is Windows currently installed or do you just have the installation DVD?

Because if you have it installed, yes, there are programs to get it.

I'm not sure about if you only have the DVD though.

EDIT: FYI, keeping a DVD inside the DVD case will prevent both losing it and braking it.. ;)

So let me get this straight:

I want to STEAL Vista by getting the key out of the installation disc? Do explain to me how that is possible. Seriously. Makes no sense whatsoever. How is it possible to STEAL Vista from the damn installation CD. THINK.

If I wanted any damn code there are 101 websites out there with codes, not to mention torrent sites filled with Vista DVD images that are cracked.

If I wanted to STEAL the damn thing I would have gone and downloaded a torrent and been done with it.
    PirateBay + Utorent= Vista
I wouldn't be here try to figure out the mess and deal with BS accusations if I wanted to STEAL Vista.

Check in the "Hardware" forum, my hard drive just died and I am trying to install Vista on my backup external hard drive.

Before you start throwing out accusations make sure you got all the facts...

This is actually funny. People think I am going to STEAL Vista because I want to know if the damn KEY is in the CD itself. How is that even possible? And no, I don't want the damn answer, if it is possible. It's a damn rhetorical question before you jump on that and start hurling accusations.

Yes, it is an OEM DVD. Which is why I thought the key might be on the DVD. Because the DVD is fried, I was hoping I could get the key out of it and use the anytime upgrade DVD to install it.

Think guys. Seriously. Use a bit of logic.

It's EXACTLY the same thing as accusing someone of piracy if they ask if it's possible to extract their windows key from their hard drive! THINK. Seriously. If you are going to accuse someone of something, at least make sure the damn accusation is possible! There are GUIDES that explain exactly how to retrieve YOUR key from you hard drive in many sections in this very forum. I was wondering if the same thing could be done off of the DVD since my damn hard drive died and I obviously can't get jack out of that now.

And no I didn't read the damn piracy rules holmes. I am not a pirate and I don't wear a damn eye patch. I just want to use MY bloody Vista key without having to call up tech support and go through crap with them. But here I am dealing with ridiculous accusations that are not even possible so I guess I might as well.

For the people who didn't feel like accusing me of anything, thank you, your help is highly appreciated.

Is it an OEM DVD for notebook and bought along with the notebook? For Vaio and Toshiba there should be a Vista key number on the back of the notebook. Sorry if I am wrong.

No commercial Vista disc has a key embedded on it. Vista discs all contain the same stuff, which means you can use any vista disc to do the clean install. The key you enter during the setup will install the version your purchased.

If the disc came from an OEM, the key will be in a sticker in your notebook/desktop

If its retail, it will come with the packaging along with the disc

You still need to activate and authenticate the copy with Windows before the OS becomes fully functional.

It begs us to wonder.. "why would you be trying to extract the key from a disc" when you should already have the key beneath your notebook.

If you legally bought/obtained the disk, contact Microsoft and ask them what they can do.

Also please report these kinds of threads sooner so that mods can take care of if.
