Just started using Vista in Nov., I have a defrag. problem, I'll get my HD"s down to 2% defrag. , but the next time I use my computer it will go right back to +- 30% defrag. and it doesn't matter what or how long I'am using it. This thing will not stay in a reasonable state.![]()

do you use the defrag tool or command line?
-
I use the tool and tried a couple third party apps.
-
If you open the command line as admin and then run 'defrag.exe c: -v -w' it will perform a defrag on all files (normally it ignores fragments over 64MB) and give you all the details of the defrag (-w for the full defrag and -v for more details)

Generally the Windows defragmentor software is bad. You could download a free trial of O&O defragmentor or Diskkeeper. Both are good products.
-
You should use the search feature to find threads that compare defraging programs. personally, i prefer Auslogics disk defrag.
-
I've been using Auslogic since I got this laptop as well - very fast and very simple (a bit too simple some might say - no fancy advanced features or scheduling, at least not in the free version).
-
I was under the impression (according to the Vista tweak thread) that TuneXP's startup boost should not be used. Instead, I used the other tweak program that someone suggested.
It could also be a virus. Try pressing F8 at boot and going into Safe Mode w/ Networking. Update your virus scanning software, and run a full scan. It's hard to believe that this is a natural occurrence. Vista is definitely not the root of the cause. -
Is Ccleaner a defragger? since it removes useless files from registry?
-
CCleaner has a registry cleaner built in, but it does not have any defrag capability. Basically it's good at removing junk files that build up on any computer.

Get JKDefrag and run it in Safe Mode. I think that'll solve your problem..
-
JKDefrag has worked well for me too.

Is JKDefrag really all that good? Why?

2. There are no configuration/install files. Just double click 'JkDefrag.exe' and let it do it's thing. And there are other options as well.
3. It defragments everything (most in Windows), a lot more in Safe Mode.
4. Efficient. I ran three other defragmenters afterwords and they couldn't find a single file afterwords. I did the opposite (ran them first and then JKDefrag after) and it found several files that they didn't defragment.
Good program. Congrats to J.C. Kessels. -
How does it compare with Auslogics disk defrag?
-
ScifiMike12 Drinking the good stuff
Then I ran JKDefrag after.
In the JKDefrag log it said: "Total size of fragmented items: 8192 bytes, 2 clusters, 0.0001% of all items, 0.0000% of disk". Most likely these fragments were of the Auslogics program that I just ran before.
So, that program seems to be relatively good. I just prefer JKDefrag because it defragments all partitions/drives in one setting and also doesn't need to be installed on my computer. -
Alright i'll try it. Seems pretty good.
