When booting Windows Vista 64 programs in the task bar like volume, battery and network load immediately, and the hard drive logo is busy. Then it stops for the 30 seconds no hard drive light at all and nothing loads also. I am able to launch Firefox and go online. After this delay with no HDD activity IBM Active Protection, Anti Virus, One Note and HP Printer items load. Does anyone know what causes this? I have already disabled items in msconfig that I don’t need like Adobe Update and I have tried tampering with services.msc both with no help and put the services.msc back to default. Any help?

check in the event logs if something is in there that looks like an error/timeout after boot.

Where do the slow starting programs load from (what key)?

Vista has a delay load shell registry key (new from XP)...could be they are loading from there. OneNote doesn;t load from there, though, so I don't think that is the issue.

Here's the real question, though--does it matter?

Unless you need those programs, a delayed load shouldn't be an issue. I suspect at lesat the AV is already loading and what you see coming up late is the UI...probably the same for the rest of the late starters

This TechNet article by Mark Russinovich about the _Vista kernel contains a nice little description of the delayed autostart functionality that was introduced with _Vista.

thanks for the replies after boot for example, I cant use the touchpad side to scroll or the volume change button wont display its position on the screen though the volume changes. Later these features boot and it ok. but can I turn the delay off?

Below is the application tab of the event viewer of Vista 64bit. I keep in classic gui mode. So everyone this is Vista no Win2k

clear your log, then reboot so we have a fresh start point. Things are a bit unclear.

Does this computer connect to a domain?

You seem to be having a big pause as the search service starts....are your search settings at default or did you configure them?

Another long pause as Norton starts? Nothing surprises me with Norton

Another as active sync starts (do you have a pda?)

I have the same issue. Everything loads and then it sits on delay. If I launch HWMonitor it won't load the values. It seems to be the networking part of the bootup although with my last install I never had this issue. I attached a screenshot of the big delay - I have no idea what this means, anyone?
