    Gateway T6836
    Vista Home Premium x64
    4GB RAM
    T5750

Last Night my wife's computer booted and came up with this same exact error:
    http://img53.imageshack.us/img53/5714/59170593ko1.jpg

I tried booting several times and ended up having to file a "piracy" report with microsoft.

    Gateway techs were worthless.

I tried repairing the startup files, now I can boot to desktop. However, most of my programs will not load and yield this error (except replace the filepath for specific programs, IE.exe, firefox.exe, itunes, picasa, etc.):

I have tried running sfc /scannow and it says it is unable to repair. I am including the portion of the log (this logfile is insanely humongous btw, I've only included like 2% of it...sorry }8^[] ) that I could find errors in.

Any and all help would be great. I'd really not have to format and reinstall if I don't have to.

    Thanks.

    Hi.

Do you have a Vista DVD, if so boot from it and select repair! , you will not lose any of your personal data!

I just tried to repair, and I was given a screen that gave the following options:
-Repair Startup (said there was nothing to repair)
-System Restore (which I did to a point a week ago...didn't help)
-Restore from backup (none to restore)
-Memory test and whatnot (didn't bother)
    -Command Prompt

I did not see the traditional "Repair", where it reinstalls the vanilla windows system files. Do I need to proceed like I am going to do a Fresh Install, and will there then be an option to repair (after you enter your Serial key).

Or should I do an install over what was there.

    Thanks for the help.

Crap, install failed with this error: 80070017 (I believe)

Any clues? I haven't found anything conclusive yet. I wonder if this is related to my initial problem.

...dag, I'm pretty sure it's bricked. And I'm half-way confident that Gateway's vista install disk is crap. I'll follow up if I find a solution. Until then, I need to try and get my wife's documents off.

Reps to you when I can again Swarm...tx =]

You can check out this Repair Viista Guide.

I think that error refers to a corrupted media. Probably there is data corruption on your OS disc.

See if you are able to install Vista, by copying all the contents of the OS disc on to the HDD and then run setup. (Or make an image and mount it, instead of copying, or rewrite the OS disc at a slower, > 4x speed)

I had something similar happen to me with Ultimate 64bit. Started up my laptop and got the BSOD, finally I got it to boot in safe mode and I found out the the appatch folder was corrupted. Didn't know how to fix it so I reformatted and said hell with Vista and put XP back in. Been happy ever since.

    Yeah, it's all beefed.

Since it was an incomplete installation, I have a windows.old folder, so I can boot from that, but the User profile won't load.

I'm just going to get my enclosure back, get her docs, and do a restore to factory default.

I can't even get in using Safe Mode, it lets me enter in login but then it hangs with no response.
