Is it fair to say that if you don't like Vista GUI, you wouldn't like Windows 7 GUI either?
By default, does Windows 7 have significantly reduced UAC prompt?
-
UAC works at the same level as under vista by default.
Although there is now a UAC control program installed (one can type UAC into start menu search to get to it)
It has a slider from basically "annoy me a lot" to "bugger off UAC"
Hope this is what you wanted -
The Win7 interface is a little simpler and cleaner and shinier and eye-candier than Vista. I have problems with each, but it is possible you may find the Win7 interface more to your liking.

I found, by default without changing anything, UAC prompts have dropped significantly in 7 compared to Vista. Even for things like Defrag I don't get prompted in 7 whereas I did in Vista.
Not that I minded UAC prompts in Vista that much but 7 feels like the OS is that much less in your way than Vista imo. -
What ATC said, +1
Also, I find that there is significantly less disk activity in W7 to bog down your user experience.

The UAC in 7 is not nearly as bad as the one in Vista....and i'm running it on it's Default setting. I don't get harassed to do anything! You wouldn't even know it's running.
As for the GUI, even though they both look similar, that really comes down to user preference but i've learned to love 7s GUI much better. -

You can always turn the GUI off and revert to the old "classic" GUI.

What everyone else said about UAC +1.
The GUI seems a little more snazzy but I prefer Window Blinds. Unfortunately, WB doesn't work with W7 yet. -
It was documented by several news sites that lowering UAC from default will of course diminish it's security. The higher it is the better. I think it's a balance. If you know what you download and run, then default is fine. If you put Win7 on a user that clicks on all image.exe, then it might help to have it at the max level (in the sense that the user knows that a picture doesn't need, must not need Admin privileges). And even setup that account as limited so that UAC needs the admin account password for acceptance.
UI technologies in Win7 (and Vista)
- Aero: Uses the GPU to render everything (of course the content is drawn by the CPU, as this is the application fault)
- Aero basic: Uses XP UI engine. Which uses the CPU to render.
- Classic: Uses the CPU to draw.
CPU sucks at drawing, and if you look closely at your screen when you move/scale windows.. you will see that Aero does a way better job. Also it's nice to have yoru system slow down when you render/compile/transcode, when you move your mouse/drag a windows, etc.. -
The only really annoying GUI thing in Windows 7 for me, is the Control Panel. A bunch of the options here re-use the Control Panel window, ie. they ignore the "open everything in a separate window" option. So I have a perfectly sized Control Panel window, then anything I open is too big and has scroll bars which I have to adjust the window to get rid of, which wrecks my perfectly sized Control Panel window. ANGER.
The taskbar took some getting used to, but I actually like it now. -

The Shell of Windows 7 Release Candidate (that is, the look) is almost the same as it is in Vista. However, many small changes have been done to make it "feel" better.
For instance, compare the first two pictures on the following website: http://windowsteamblog.com/blogs/windowsexperience/archive/2008/10/28/how-libraries-amp-homegroup-work-together-in-windows-7.aspx. Notice how in Windows 7, focus is put on the contents of the Explorer Windows, whereas in Vista the Explorer Chrome (the Explorer buttons, the left panel etc.) is more distracting. It may not seem much, but there are many of these small changes. For Windows 7, Microsoft decided that " Small things matter - good and bad". (One of the design principles of Windows 7)
See: http://channel9.msdn.com/pdc2008/PC22/ (or a summary of that video: http://www.vista123.net/content/design-principles-windows-7)

UAC again: In the default setting of Windows 7, UAC is less annoying but sadly doesn't give you any real security at all anymore. However, if you set the slider of the new Windows 7 UAC Control Panel to the highest setting, it will be exactly the same as in Vista: a bit more annoying and a lot more secure.
