Hi,
Don't know which edition of Vista to get. I want the most stable edition.
I know that XP Pro and XP Home were developed on 2 different bases. Xp Pro is based on Windows 2000 which is based on Windows NT- all means more stable. While the cheaper Xp Home is based on Windows Me which sucked. Couple years ago i had Xp Home installed and it would always freeze when it slowed down, so i switched over to Pro and it literally never froze again.
I'm on still on Pro now but only recently looking into Vista. Are all editions of Vista based on XP Pro now? Or is there still a 2 tier system: Ultimate/Business from XP Pro and Home basic from Xp Home?
thanks

I'm pretty sure XP Home and Pro are both based on the same NT Kernal (5.1).
All editions of Vista are based on the same kernal version. The difference between Basic, Home Premium, Business, and Ultimate are in the features which can be found on the Microsoft website. -
The breakdown:
Home basic: No aero, for basic use
Home premium: Aero, multimedia features
Vista Business: For businesses, or very serious people
Vista Ultimate: All the others combined -
).
Also, Ultimate comes with both 32-bit and 64-bit disks while the other versions you'll have to get a 64-bit upgrade DVD (only a few bucks) unless you buy the 64-bit specific version. -
Both XP Home and XP Pro are based on the Windows NT kernel, as is Windows Vista. XP Home is not based on Windows ME. ME was the last version of Windows based on the Windows 9x/DOS kernel.
Perhaps you were using software or hardware that required XP Pro's features, such as domain joining. Other than for what XP Pro was designed to improve on (mainly security and networking) XP Home should have performed just as well.
Vista is like XP in that all versions are based on the same code, with the versions above Home having additional features. Business/Ultimate has all the networking technology that XP Home and Vista Home lack and may have been giving you trouble.
On the whole I'd recommend just sticking with XP, though - unless you specifically need Vista, there's really no benefit in switching to it now. -
