What are the Vista Home Basic vs. Ultimate RAM requirements? Does Ultimate take up much more RAM than Home Basic?

Yes it does, I think Microsoft recommended minimum for Basic and Ultimate are 512MB and 1GB respectively, but in general it should be like 1GB and 2GB (for any kind of decent performance)

I'm not sure what's eating my RAM, but I have Ultimate and right now, on standard web/messenger running setup, I use about 40% of my 3.5gbs of recognizable RAM (32bit Vista, I have 4gbs actually). I believe that Windows Dreamscene consumes some memory (light on the CPU though), so it's likely on of the main pushers on my system.

    It's worth it though ;)

I run vista business with 2gb or ram, and it also uses up around 40% of ram, so I guess its just no matter how much ram u have vista allocates about half for itself :)

For all version of vista the recommended requirements are 512-1GB, but i agree that 1GB-2GB is needed. I have 2GB and i rarely use 1GB but when it does go over 1GB i am glad i have 2. Also lilbro we don't talk about torrents here because they aren't really appropriate.

That is a feature in vista.... SuperFetch... it uses unused ram to load programs, boot (hibernation/standby), etc.... It also monitors what apps you use the most and loads them into ram.....

Truth is, even with 2 gb of ram, we seldom use that much (unless you are doing something specific, at which time SF will tune down). You could argue, if SF "hangs" or has "issues" then you could face problems... I've not seen that yet....
