So this is the scenario:
I'm getting a laptop with Vista Home Premium.
IUPUI offers Vista Ultimate to students for $20, so I'd like to get that.
If I get the Vista Ultimate DVD, can I put it in and upgrade my Home Premium to Ultimate (I know that there are specific upgrade discs, but this would be a full Ultimate DVD), or do I have to reinstall Vista from scratch with the Ultimate DVD?

99% you can upgrade.
you basically just need the cd key that comes with your ultimate disk, it will most likely ask you to pop in the ultimate dvd.
or rather, upon inserting the ultimate dvd, it will ask you for the new key. -

All Vista discs contain all versions of Vista. Which version gets installed depends on the cd-key. If you have a Vista Ultimate cd-key, you'll be able to install vista ultimate.
Should work when upgrading as well, as long as you get asked for your cd-key? -
Thanks, that's a relief.

if you dont know what your vista premium key is when you get your laptop. -
I did that, upgrading a home premium to ultimate, and gotta warn you, it will take a while to do so!
Vista Home Premium + Ultimate disc = Ultimate?
