Ok, this is a warning message to all Windows Vista (Home Premium) users. Do NOT install the latest update for Windows Vista through windows update, your system will crash.
I'm running XP now and do not know the number of the update; I will post it here later. So this is how it happened:
I installed COMODO and PeerGuardian. It slowed down the system a little bit, I uninstalled both. Scanned with 3 different tools and didn't find any viruses. Everything worked fine and there was one downloaded update awaiting to be installed. I installed it and it asked me for a restart,
I restarted it and it failed to boot, even in Safe Mode.
This is just a warning but if anybody had this problem and/or was able to fix it, please let me know

Yea, I experienced the same issue:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=206587 -
Weird.
I installed the lastest updates and everythng working fine so far
I am running Vista64 so i dont know if that has anything to do with the problem -
You mean the ones from 01/09? There were 2, but I didn't get any problems after installing them (although you make me scared now... >.>)
-
I can't reboot my computer after installing those updates. I have to do a full shut down or else it BSOD's on restart. Weird I know and I'm pissed off cause I can't figure it out.
-
My computers were fine...
-
Nothing seems to help, I've tried "counting to ten" and booting from Vista DVD
I'm about to restore my whole Vista partition from my December backup -
i think this problem is isolated with dell laptops. because my gateway installed all 6 alright its been 3 days and no problem so far.

Just to make all of these 'BSOD after updates from Jan 8th/9th' threads are updated, I'm just downloaded and installed SP1 RC and the BSODs are now history (touch wood) - I've tried several restarts and they have all been OK
If you're happy with an RC OS on your system then go ahead and do it! -
Ok, let's see what we have in common.
- My system in sig,
- Installed COMODO firewall
- Installed Peerguardian 2
- Had office 2007 installed (it updated too)
- Dualboot with XP
See if those of you who had this problem had anything from the list above -
-
-
Oh, one more thing I remember installing an OPTIONAL update from nVidia. (before it crashed)
-
Is it only with Vista 32 that having a problem? I am running Vista 64 with all the latest updates and have no problem what so ever.
-
And just for everyone to know, as FooTBall100 did, I installed Vista SP1 RC and now the problem from the updates is gone. So the SP1 RC will get rid of the reboot problem. -
Ours did, too. Here's an idea MicroSoft: UAC should be updated to protect against Windows Updates!
I feel MicroSoft deserves to be sued out of existence. My wife has a Vista 32 Home Premium running on a Gateway laptop. The latest Vista Update completely crashed her computer so it would not even boot. That waste of time utility Startup Repair and System Restore couldn't fix it. I think a kid in 2nd year computer science class could have done a better job programming a repair utility. At least it did initially indicate two corrupt files. Laughable, they were battery drivers.
What I had to do is to go into the command line and copy back from the backup drive those two battery drivers. You would think the idiots that designed Startup Repair and System Restore could have at least figured out how to automatically replace drivers, duh! Anyway, that got it to boot but the problem was much greater. It seems over 1000 files were updated and so far I see that the files in the Program Files\Common Files folder are not even accessible because it states the entire folder is corrupt. Folders don't get corrupted, the files in them do. This is completely unacceptable and probably unfixable. I sincerely hope MicroSoft gets sued out of business within the next 10-years if not sooner or gains some sort of atonement with the Windows 7 project. I think Vista is just absolute crap.
I'm either thinking of doing an XCOPY of the common folder from the backup to the %homedrive% or just trying a complete reinstall. I understand that you have to contact MicroSoft to get permission to do even that. I'll bet they have some unusually long and cumbersome phone tree to go through. We'll see.
My advice to others with a good dual-core system would be either to install XP on a partition or an Ubuntu Beryl or at least try Puppy Linux, which can be booted and used right from the CD-ROM. That will keep your computer usable if this should ever happen to you. You used to be able to rely more on MicroSoft utilities to fix problems but not now. Ironically, you can rely on MicroSoft updates to cause problems... and big ones, too. Can you say class action suit boys and girls?
If I do get her Vista working, I'm going to see if Zone Alarm has made a Vista compatible version yet and use it to forever block Windows updates. Sorry Mr. Teddy Roosevelt but "Fear" isn't the only thing to fear, anymore.
Well, if anyone knows of a good link to do a re-install on a Vista that was NOT and upgrade, I would appreciate it.

That's another reason for me to switch to XP. Goodbye, Vista, it was nice knowing you. To bad you were too slow, clunky, and problem filled to use.

This sounds like it might be a problem with Windows update installing a new disc controller. I had the same problem with a sata driver from windows update last year with completely different hardware.
Dell 1330 people with this problem, I would recommend hard rebooting to get into Vista and install these drivers. -
I just found this thread. I had some issues with updates this past weekend. I got a new Dell 1720 last week. Friday night some updates were automatically installed. Sat morning I installed Office H&S 2007 and proceeded to download the updates for it. There were 2 MS updates available and two optional updates - one from Nvidia. I downloaded all and the problems began. The system locked up during the install. It continued to lock up all morning. After about 4 hours of frustration, I finally did a system restore back a couple of days, installed Office, and then downloaded each available update by itself one at a time. This time no problems and everything seems to be working fine (fingers crossed).

Yeah, I had this problem with one of the updates in January and the most recent update for February....
I had to find my windows cd again to do a system restore.. >_< -
Just a warning, I had a alert for updates, 2 of them, yesterday and so I downloaded and installed them. When my sytem went to restart it wouldn't start and it when to a screen that said i had to try to let the program run for repair. After about an hour when it finally got done it still would not let me past the repair screen so it suggested that i do a system restore and finally I got it working. I thought it must have been a fluke. So,today when I got on my laptop I had another alert for updates, 7 this time from Microsoft again and so I tried to download and install them and it crashed again before it even finished downloading. So. once again I got it fixed and now I have a new alert for 6 more updates. I have a Gateway laptop and am running Vista. I don't know what's going on with Microsoft but it's bad. I'm trying to figure it out and will post new comments as I get information.
-
Weird, everything is smooth in my laptop.

of course, my 1420 updates just fine. That optional Nvidia update was probably NVidia drivers for your GPU. If you have Laptop2go drivers like I do, that optional update will show up. Just never have check the option to see what would happen. Now I know what will happen if I check that box.
