I'm purchasing an HP dv2000t with the following configuration and am wondering whether I should get Home Premium or Basic:

    # – Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo T5600(1.83GHz/2MB L2Cache)
    # – 14.1" WXGA BrightView Widescreen (1280x800)
    # – 128MB NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) Go 7200
    # – HP Imprint Finish + Microphone + Webcam
    # – $50 off upgrade from 1GB (2 Dimm) to 2GB (2 Dimm)!
    # – FREE Upgrade from 80GB 5400RPM to 120GB 5400RPM !!
    # – FREE Upgrade: 8X DVD+/-R/RW w/Double Layer Support
    # – Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection
    # – No TV Tuner w/remote control
    # – High Capacity 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery

Could anyone tell me what the difference is between the two?

Do not get Basic. It's stripped of most of the features, including Aero. Home Premium is probably the best all around version of Vista for the average user.

I agree with all the comments here. Basic is a crippled version of Vista. I'd totally go for Premium..which I opted for when I ordered my laptop a few days ago.

TBH if you are happy using Windows XP Home then Vista Home basic should do the job as well. But as others have mentioned Vista Premium is the best value amongst Vista editions, but if you dont care about Aero, Media center and other features( see link) then you could save some $$ and settle for Home basic.
