I know this has been covered hundreds of times in this thread, but I need help understanding. I am going to college this fall, and the uni recommends business or ultimate or xp pro due to the networking hassels of home premium. What kind of problems are there and can they be fixed ?

Your university has a managed domain. In order to hook up to it and connect to resources, they insist you have ultimate/business or xp pro.
Generally, this means network storage and network printers. As a condition of hooking up to the domain, they will also probably push out some sort of AVsolution to ensure you are not infected.
You CANNOT hook up to a domain with Home Premium or Windows XP home--it does not have the required infrastructure.
If you do not go with their recommendation, you may still be able to hook up to the internet, but you will not have access to other resources--you would have to ask them that specifically.
Hooking up to these resources may be required for some classes--for example, a prof may require that you place homework in a folder share--or he may require you to download a file from a share...or print to a printer in his office. It depends -
Linux FTW!!! School all the n00bz!!!

Do you already have a laptop? -
Most universities will also offer educationally discounted copies of Vista. Mine has Ultimate for $30, and I've heard of some schools only charging $5 for the same thing!
Ask their IT about that. -
I was looking at the P-6831 FX. Thanks Greg, i will definitely need to look into that.

Damn, that's low. The college I'm going next year has Business OEM for $100 (for the co-op members, $145 otherwise). $100 for it is still a good price but $5 for ultimate??? -
Here's a thread on the laptop you're looking at. If you can get a discount on an OS, I suggest you try to get a laptop without one...

Lol, that sucks at my university it is only 24 bucks for ultimate.
