Start > Default Programs. Then choose the link to set your default programs. In the dialogue window that pops up, locate your preferred email program in the box on the left, click "Add" and it should appear in the box on the right.

Not sure I understand the question.

In windows mail go to tools>accounts>highlight the account and click set as default.

If you want to compose the letter from gmail, I think you have to go to gmail and sign on to your account and send it from there.

If you have multiple accounts in windows mail and want to temprarrily send from your non default account, create the email and then when you are ready to send it, click the tiny arrow by send and receive. It should list all the accounts and you just click the one you want to send from.

Again I am not sure what you are really trying to do.

Edit: You beat me Shyster. I think you understood the question better.

Probably only because I just got my very first _Vista system three weeks ago, and I've been noodling through the various functions and toys, including the "Default Programs" item on the Start menu, which mystified me at first (but then, it ain't too hard to mystify this geriatric :D).

Ok, try this one - I am assuming that you actually have your preferred email client installed on your system, right? - Start > Default Programs > Set program access and computer defaults and, when you get to the dialogue window, click on the radio button next to the item "Non-Microsoft"

    Question-

Can you set Gmail to be the default or do you have to set an email client like outlook, windows mail, Thunderbird, etc? I don't know.

If you did not use a slide ruler in physics and chem, I don't think you qualify as geriatric. :)

Unfortunately I don't know either; I would guess "no" though because from what I saw, it looks like the functionality only considers programs that are installed on the system, and cannot take something like an internet url.

That being said, it might be possible to write a small routine that would achieve the same end.

here is an example of what is going on... i tried to reply to an ad on craigslist... when i click on the link to reply to the ad a window opens and it is windows mail... i do not even have an account with windows mail and do not want one... nothing mentioned yet will work...

the only way i can figure out to reply to the craigs ad is copy the "to" line from windows mail and then go to gmail and compose a new email and paste the "to" line that i copied from the windows mail... hope i am making sense but nothing has worked yet to fix this... thx...

Well, as I said earlier, while I don't know for sure, I would say that you cannot do what you're trying to do because you use gmail as your email client - without something installed on your system, my guess is that the system's applications resolver (my term) simply has no way to associate mailto: links with your gmail account.

I suppose you could try making your gmail account your internet browser's homepage, and then making your browser the default application for handling email. That wouldn't get you all the way to a newly-opened message with To:, From: and Subject: lines filled in, just waiting for you to type and send, but it would get you to your email page (if it worked at all, that is).

thanks to everyone that tried to help in this matter... i am getting more confused as we go along here but i really started to have problems shortly after going from ie 7 to ie 8 recently... to me it seems like ie 8 wants to dictate to me how i use my computer and it got slower too...

at any rate i think the problem is that i just get very confused with technical stuff... thanks again...

Don't worry, I'm just confused, period! :D Here's a perfectly good example - after expatiating at length about why I thought you couldn't do what you wanted to do, I went and did a little googling on the phrase "gmail hosted client" - which after a few false starts got me to the gmail help webpage about
    kopfpatsch.gif

Let me say that again: kopfpatsch.gif

So, here it is, the Gmail help page that describes how to make Gmail your default mail application. And, for those who are too lazy to click the link, here's the text thereof:

You're too kind. I committed the cardinal sin on NBR: not going a quick google before opening my big fat mouth (metaphorically speaking, of course :D) for a giant helping of shoe leather (at least I've gotten used to the taste) - it was only right that I corrected my foolishness - a side-dish of crow goes quite nicely with the aftertaste of shoe leather. :D

Why don't you just set up Windows Mail or Live Mail to wrk with your Gmail account? That would leave the conveniance off offline access and several accounts in one place.

True, but he never gave a good reason ;)

And he didn't mention live mail :D

I cannot stand webmail - on the one hand you have to have internet access, sometimes you are on horrid connectin, etc.

But aside from that - I could throw insults at Tiscali as this is an insult to their paying customers - if you use Tiscali Webmail you have their advertisment at the bottom of your e-mail.
(Tiscali is also an internet provider)

Use a client like Outlook, Live Mail etc. then you haven't.

This doesn't answer all your questions, but I've been using this program to send attachments and you might find it useful with google.
