so i added another 320gb to my laptop and im at 640gb now.
everything on the c drive is indexed. i went to indexing options in control panel, added my newly added drive (which has like 100gb of music). so, basically, on the list of things to index, both my 'hard drives' (c and d partitions) are listed.
and then i clicked on rebuild index.
the index was rebuilt successfully - i let it run for over an hour. but for some reason, when i click the start button/orb, and start typing in the name of a file on the second drive, nothing appears.
and even when i do a windows+F and then search indexed locations, nothing from the new drive appears... when i search specifically for files on that drive itself (like d:\*.mp3), it does find some files.
so for some reason it appears like vista did not index the 2nd drive although i added it to the index options AND rebuilt the index database. any idea what the problem may be? i dont think i missed any steps but it's not working so that doesnt mean much.....
thank you guys in advance.

did you reboot after the indexing?
cheers ... -

yeah i did reboot. and i also went to windows explorer, right clicked on the new drive, went to properties, and checked off 'index this drive for faster searches' or something to that effect.
it seems that when i click start then type in the name of a file i want to search for, it is only looking at the index'd locations on the C drive and not on the D drive... it's odd....
i have rebuilt the index twice and this is over the course of a few days. i leave the unit idle and let it index at full speed as opposed to hindeirng it by using the laptop as it's indexing.... i have read several how to's on the internet and for some reason, it's still not working for me.... -

One thing is that I have it index DIRECTORIES not drives. That might help.

hmmm.....
by default, i checked off the drive but that also does subdirectories, etc. meaning when i look at the subdirectories in indexing options, they are all checked off. this is what you mean by have it index subdirectories, correct?
i will take a look at my settings once again and rebuild the index tonight.
thanks for the details. -

Nope. Note that I didn't say subdirectories. I said directories. More directly what I am saying is that there was no need to let the indexing service index EVERYTHING on each drive. For example, why would I want it to index the Windows directory? I don't store any docs there. Having the indexing service index everything on every drive is what makes folks think that the indexing service is slow and causing disk thrashing. Instead if you only have it index the places where you store a doc then it becomes a lean, mean service. The real reason for the indexing service is to help you find docs based on the content of those docs. So, by restricting it to only index docs locations helps it to perform better. I do have mine set to also index my Outlook files so emails are included in my searches.
Here is a quote from the help file of the indexing service:"Can I index my entire computer so all searches are fast?
You shouldn't. If you make the index too large, or if you include system file locations like the folder called Program Files, your routine searches will slow down because the index will not perform well. For best results, we recommend that you only add folders to the index that contain your personal files."
Also make sure you are using the newer version (4.0) of the indexing service and search. It is MUCH faster.

P.S. something very STRANGE is going on here. When I wrote this reply all instances of the word "docs" were spelled out as d*o*c*u*m*e*n*t*s and the stupid profanity filter changed them to "doents". I'll make the moderators aware of this. -

I think by the default configuration of this vista image that came on my hp laptop, the windows directoy, program files and some other directories are excluded. that was setup from hp.
when i added my 2nd drive, i copied only music and movies onto there. that drive has only things i want indexed on it so that's how i wanted it configured.
the only places i want indexed are my 'my documents' and my D drive - the new partition with all my recently copied music + movies. i will not be indexing the entire hard drive - only folders in which i have music and video - that's it. i dont even have a lot of doents (word, excel stuff, etc) so indexing isn't really necessary for those files in my case.
i will see if im using version 4.0 or not. thanks. -

Ah - I fixed the language filter; 'documents' shows up correctly now.
